Joy of Sake Info & How-To Guide

July 18th, 2014
By

Tonight, at the Hawaii Convention Center, the world's largest sake celebration outside Japan takes place, offering the opportunity to taste 370 premium labels in peak condition and eat ono kine grindz from 19 top restaurants from Hawaii and California! I think it's still not too late to purchase your Joy of Sake tickets for the event, so go getum!

Joy of Sake
Joy of Sake

The following is a guide for those who will be attending this year.

Joy of Sake how-to guide - (from Frolic Hawaii's Mari Taketa)

  1. Nobody gets through all 370 sake, so stop worrying about that. Thirty to 40 is a very good sampling.
  2. If you've never tried sake, start with a daiginjo A. It'll be floral, nuanced, gentle, a good intro.
  3. Check the card in front of each sake: It'll tell you if judges awarded it a gold or silver star in its category. No star doesn't mean it's bad. The overall level of sake entered in Joy of Sake judging is impressive and hard to match even in Japan, where the JOS tour ends this fall after a stop in New York next month.
  4. If you see a black star, that sake isn't available in the U.S. The card also tells you where it was made, in case you're interested in sake from a particular region.
  5. If you're a novice, don't worry about searching for the harmony of taste, aroma, body and texture the pros look for. Everyone will have a different personal favorite. Just sip to find what you like.

Celebrities Who Could Use Plastic Surgery

January 22nd, 2010
By

So the latest gossip these days (or so I hear) is about Heidi Montag's/Pratt's plastic surgery craziness, where she apparently underwent 10 surgeries during the fall, completely changing her look. (You can Google it later at your leisure cause it's probably in the "NSFW" category :P ).

On that note, the "Fave Friday" topic of the day is: Celebrities Who Could Use Plastic Surgery (or maybe even a list of those who shouldn't have gotten plastic surgery? 8) ). I know there are tons of 'em out there, but the only one I can think of, off the top of my head, is: Barbra Streisand. I'll leave the rest for you to list below. 8)

Others like DJ Qualls, Steve Buscemi, and former NBA star Sam Cassell qualify, but to me, they are quirky and endearing, and that "different" look is what makes them unique and stand out.

What I can't stand is when a celebrity is obviously ugly, but yet arrogant and overconfident (i.e. Usher). I know, I know. I know nothing about him on a personal level and it's shallow for me to come to a crass judgment based simply on what I see, but sorry Usher, you make the list. *grin*

  • Barbra Streisand
  • Usher

Wotchu tink?

Talk to me!
* What other celebrities/athletes would you like to see go under the knife.
* Am I the only one upset over NBC's ridiculous buyout of Conan O'Brien? I am soooo boycotting Jay Leno now!
* Are you ready for some football? Who you rootin' for this weekend? Jets, Colts, Vikings, or Saints? Wouldn't a Colts/Saints Super Bowl be pretty nuts?
* What did you think of the NBA All-Star Voting results?
* Does anybody really care about Tiger Woods in the sex rehab clinic?
* Any A.I. (American Idol) chatter out dea?
* Gooooo Bows! Think they got a shot against #1 WAC ranked La Tech?

Shoots den! Have a great VH07V Friday and an even greater weekend. See you on da flip side! :)

Fave Five Friday - Celebrity Photo Opps

August 14th, 2009
By

I've never been a fan of autographs. It's too easy to forge, and, unless you can verify it and possibly even sell it for a premium, to me, it's worthless. Celebrities are humans too. Some piece of paper with their chicken scratch on it doesn't hold much weight. That's just me.

But, as girly/kiddie as it sounds, what really gets me charged is getting a photo with said celeb. I value this the most because it has significance to me and me alone. I don't care if it's worthless to anyone else and ruined cause my ugly mug is in the photo, it's just good kine fun and proof - in that particular moment in time - that I was there and actually met somebody I could tell a story about.

This past weekend in Philly, I had a blasty blast. Not only did I get that interview with Bruddah Shane, I was also able to sneak in some photo opps with "stars" from the MMA world, thanks to our awesome seats at UFC 101 the night before! Peeps like:

Cutman Jacob "Stitch" Duran

Which led me to this week's Fave Five question. Which 5 celebs would you most like to have a photo with? If photos ain't your bag, you can use autographs for your list.

  1. Flavor Flav - OMG! He's so flamboyant and out there! This would be the funnest photo, like EVER! LOL!
  2. Mr. T - see above! Seems like a nice, humble guy too.
  3. Kimbo Slice - he's crazy intense, but seems like a cool, mellow cat, outside the ring. I give him mad props for starting from scratch in the coming season of the Ultimate Fighter!
  4. Michael Jordan/Tiger Woods - gods in their respective games, though I'm not sure how good/genuine their personalities would be.
  5. Hugh Hefner - no words necessary! LOL!

I'm sure I'm missing a lot more, so lemme hear it. Send over your list of celebs you'd like to get a pic with/meet/get an autograph from.

Some celebs I forgot to mention were those that would bring the most cashola to my pocket (when sold to the tabloids). *grin* Maybe a scandalous shot with Jon or Kate, or both? Or Brangelina? Or even the Octo-mom? Is she even relevant anymore? :P

Anyway, I digress. Have fun with this list on your T.G.I. Friday y'all!

Happy VHO7V Friday and have an awesome weekend k? Shoots!

(Editor's note: Don't get me wrong. I ain't no celebrity stalker/groupie type, as the pictures above may make it seem. LOL! If I had to stand in line and wait a couple hours for one photo, I wouldn't do it. These just so happen to fall into place a-ight? :P )

Chris Brown's Video Apology

July 23rd, 2009
By

I know, I know, it's like 3 days after the fact, but I already had some blogs queued up yo. Cut me some slack. :P

Anyway, if you didn't already catch this, here's Chris Brown's video apology to Rihanna and his fans. Since it's Survey Thursday, let's list some questions for you to answer at the bottom...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4SD6oBvbKY

Talk to me!
* Do you believe him?
* Do you care?
* Well scripted by him or his PR people?
* Once a beater, always a beater?
* Is growing up in an abusive home an excuse?
* Too little, too late?
* How would you have handled this if you were Chris?
* What would you do if you were Rihanna?
* What would you do if you were Rihanna's parent?
* What would you do if you were Rihanna's next boyfriend?
* Interested in Chris Brown's career going forward?

Fave Five Friday: Reality Show Couples

June 26th, 2009
By

So it was recently reported that Jon and Kate Gosselin have filed for divorce. Gee, who saw that one coming?

Along those lines, we'll go with that theme for this week's Fave Five blog: Fave Five Reality Show Couples. I needs ta be honest though. I'm more excited to fill out the least fave list. Let's see what we come up with shall we?

Fave Five Reality Show Couples:

  1. Flavor Flav + Anyone- you gotsta love his passion and honesty for trying to find true love on "Flavor of Love." And, although he's admirably decided to stay with his baby's mama following the 3rd and last season, a part of me still wants him to keep going. Can't get enough of that guy man! LOL!
  2. Travis Barker + Shanna Moakler - although they've had a lot of drama following them in the news, I was a fan of their show "Meet the Barkers" back in the day.
  3. Nick Lachey + Jessica Simpson - how can you not like both of them? They seemed to be nice peoples, at least individually... Maybe their life timing was just not right? I secretly wouldn't mind seeing them get back together and film another season of "Newlyweds". 8)
  4. New York + Tailor Made - I don't really like Tailor Made, but he and New York (Tiffany Pollard) were like the most unlikely of couples, so "I Love New York" was just fun to watch. Like a train wreck I couldn't look away from. :P
  5. Jeff Conaway + Vikki Lizzi - one word: dysfunctional. Not sure why I wasted hours of my life watching "Celebrity Rehab" but they were also fun/ridiculous to watch.

Bottom Five Reality Show Couples:

  1. Spencer Pratt + Heidi Montag - these two are number 1 on the hated list and won't ever get overtaken. Why does anyone even care what they're up to? I have no clue. Gotta hand it to Spencer for his decent marketing skills though.
  2. Jon Gosselin + Kate Gosselin - again... who cares!?
  3. Britney Spears and Kevin Federline - ditto
  4. Christopher Knight + Adrianne Curry - again...
  5. Audrina and Justin-Bobby - need I say more?

If making your list proves too challenging, feel free to just dish/vent about any of the above (or others you love/despise).

Happy VHO7V Friday y'all! Have a good weekend! I'm off to Alaska (Bon Voyage!), but be sure to check in for some exciting blogs ahead:
