American Idol Chatter - Top 8
By World Wide Ed
So the last time we dished on Idol, we had 13. Now, we're down to just 8 going into this week. Y'all still watchin'? Holla!
I gotta be honest. For the first time ever, I've been doing the speed-watching technique (I <3 my DVR!). Just not catching my interest this season for some reason. I fast-forward through all the nonsense chatter, and just watch the package before the contestants sing (to get a feel for their personality) and then their actual performance. I give that a few seconds and if it bores me to tears, it's more fast forwarding for me.
I actually watch everything (package and performance) on Casey Abrams (still seems humble and buggah makes me laugh), Haley Reinhart (why not?), Lauren Alaina (seems humble and is still my pick to win!), and Scotty McCreery (to see if I can catch more arrogance from him). The others, I'll just watch the first few seconds of their performance if anything.
Here's my previous notes from the American Idol Chatter - Top 13 blog, with updated, Top 8 notes. Add your own comments for your favorite contestants at the bottom!
- Casey Abrams - LOOOOOVE this guy! He cracks me up! He reminds me of Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen combined. Plus he can SAAAANG, and he still seems humble! (I still feel the same. Thank goodness he got saved!)
- Haley Reinhart - good eye candy (right rayboyjr?), plus she can sing pretty good too. Don't think she has what it takes to win though. Also looks like she might lose her temper at one of the judges down the road. (I still feel the same. American public is probably getting sick of her antics pretty soon.)
- Jacob Lusk - pretty good singer, but don't really like the way he overstylizes everything. If he sang straight-forward, he'd be a lot better. (Still feel the same.)
- James Durbin - Adam Lambert copycat. He can scream-sing ok, but not sure how he'll do with regular songs. (Still feel the same.)
- Lauren Alaina - My pick to win. She's so naturally talented and sings without any effort. Seems humble too. I like that. (Still feel the same)
- Paul McDonald - very quirky, but I like it. Seems like a nice guy and his smile is infectious. (Still feel the same, though I wonder if his style is getting repetitive?)
- Scotty McCreery - CAN'T STAND HIM!!! You can just tell how conceited he is. He is his own #1 fan. Dear lord he better not win! I will admit that he has a good country singing voice, but I can't stand listening to somebody so into himself. He reminds me of last season's Michael Lynche! And he tries to act all nice and respectful, but I'm not buying it!
(Still feel the same. Even J-Lo told him to not get into his own head too much! I LOVE IT! You can tell that he's trying to tone it down a little bit and act humble, but I'm still not buying it!) - Stefano Langone - pretty strong voice in the upper register. Seems nice, but talks too much. (He's starting to annoy me and needs to go. He still talks too much and seems to be getting conceited as well.)
Eliminated Notes:
- Ashton Jones - way too much spunk/confidence for me. There's more show than singing so far to me. (Not a surprise at all that she got eliminated early.)
- Karen Rodriguez - one of my favorite girls to win the whole thing. She can blow! (This was a slight shocker! I thought she could sing the lights out!)
- Naima Adedapo - No idea why she made it. I can appreciate that she has so much passion for singing, but I still haven't seen anything worthwhile from her. I hope she proves me wrong, because I really think the judges made a mistake by not putting Robbie Rosen through. (Not really a surprise that she got eliminated)
- Pia Toscano - OK, and pretty good voice. Need to hear more from her to have a better opinion. (WHAT IN THE HECK!!!??? I thought for sure she should've stayed on until close to the end. Maybe America assumed she would be safe???)
- Thia Megia - kinda quiet, but can sing pretty good. That Michael Jackson comparison from Randy Jackson was a reach I thought, but she has a pretty good voice. Wanna see more personality from her. (She can sing, but it wasn't really a surprise as she lacked the personality for America to latch onto. I'm sure she'll do fine as she is still so young and talented).
My picks for the Top 3 finalists are:
Talk to me!
* Is it me or is Steven Tyler the worst judge ever invented? He says "Beautiful" like 100 times a show for everything and doesn't offer any constructive advice/criticism at all. I think I want Paula back! LOL!
* Can we all agree that J-Lo is awesome? She seems so genuine and that she really cares for the contestants. Her advice is always on point too.
* Have you guys heard about the budding romance between Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart? Oooooh... rumors! LOL!
* What do you think of the contestants left? Any surprises?
* Who is your pick to win it all?
Have a good one y'all!
In other news...
The Oceanic Time Warner Cable and Clear Channel Radio Hawaii produced Kokua for Japan event that I mentioned last week, was a HUGE success! Through the generous donations of both attendees as well as corporations and online donations, the event was able to raise a whopping 1.6 million dollars! WOW is all I gotta say! Great job Hawaii! ... hey Ed ... AI?!! ... you dishin' on AI?!!! ... actually checked in because I thought you'd be bloggin' on H50, which aired a new episode last night btw ... but if it has to be AI, then it's AI, I guess ... but like I said before ... bleh!!! ...
... here's my take on the singers ... condensed version ...
... Casey Abrams ... like the guy ... not a fan of the singing style ... judges kicking themselves for saving him now, huh??? ... cause he's not going to win ... and Pia had a better shot ...
... Haley Reinhart ... eye candy??? ... maybe, but not for me ... I just can't stand the continual grunt in her voice ... needs to go ...
... Jacob Lusk ... don't like his style ... don't like his attitude ... needs to go
... James Durbin ... picked this guy to win ... don't care that he seems like a former contestant ... entertaining ...
... Lauren Alaina ... great singer ... but way too boring for me ... not distinctive ... if she doesn't win ... you won't remember her next year ...
... Paul McDonald ... one of my favorites ... just like his style ... yeah he's quirky ... has a thin voice ... no power ... whatever ... but entertaining ... and he won't win either ...
... Scotty McCreery ... agree with you ... don't like him ... but I think he'll make it far ... useless to get frustrated over him because the judges and America is supporting him ...
... Stefano Langone ... weak weak weak voice ... don't hear what the judges hear ... and his squinting eyes are distracting ... liked it better when he closed it ...
... my favorite, Thia, got booted as expected ... had no shot in winning ... maybe too young ... little personality, etc ... but I loved her voice ... I'll take her pure, clean, and as they've said "boring" voice over anyone else ...
... whoa, I guess that wasn't so condensed ...
...Have a Good One Everyone!!! ...

you know what i don't understand, there's so much hype about the shocking elimination of that girl last week, pia... why did the judges think to use their "i'll save you sucka" pass for the bearded fozzie bear guy a few weeks earlier? is fozzie that good, too? sorry i don't watch any idol for a long time, i just like to see the train wrecks in the auditions.
April 12th, 2011 at 11:56 am
Still strongly disagree with you on Scotty McCreery. To me it's just an rather irrational prejudice on your part; I trust the Idol audience and judges more than you. Prediction: Your favorite Casey Abrams will be long gone before McCreery based on sheer vocal talent. That's what the competition is all about—singing and performance (stage presence), of which by the way, Pia, unfortunately, was lacking. Great, great, pipes though.

LOL! I know! I just realized that when I came home from my softball game and turned on the TV. Was too late though cause I already queued up dis one. Oh well, next time! Just FYI (and mine!), here's the schedule for #H50 for the rest of this season:
* 04/18 (new)
* 04/25 (rerun)
* 05/02 (new)
* 05/09 (new)
* 05/16 (season finale)
P.S. Agree with you on Casey, Scotty and Stefano.
WORD!!!
Yeah, like beej mentioned above, I wonder if the judges regret saving "fozzie" when they could've used it on Pia this week. Crazy.
I agree with you for the most part Lanaiboy. I would trust the judges more than me too. I have no professional musical background so I don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to purely "judging" Scotty specifically for the show. I do have an opinion though, whether you choose to agree with it or not, as do you. Like I said before, I never knocked his country talent at all. I'm a country fan, and he's got a GREAT country voice. He actually did really well last week with Elvis' song and I knew he'd be safe. I don't doubt that he'll be hanging around for a while. I've already come to terms with that. LOL! Like rayboyjr said above, "America is supporting him..." If I never saw what I saw in the shows leading up to the Top 24, I probably would be too. A good sign of who isn't liked (internally) is how the contestants interact with one another. Handshakes instead of hugs, distanced from groups or left out of cliques, etc. I like to watch for that too.
BTW, Casey is not my favorite. Lauren is.
April 12th, 2011 at 1:29 pm
i was wondering if the judges second guessed using their save for fozzie, too. i thought pia had a great voice, though maybe she should have selected some other songs in the earlier weeks besides those ballads. love lauren's personality and her voice, just think she needs to be singing the right songs. i think she'd do well in the country market. i think stefano is getting better and, at the same time, getting a little arrogant. scotty is starting to get on my nerves... lol.
April 12th, 2011 at 3:04 pm
What?? I like Scotty.

Voice is so-so.
I loved his duet with Lauren - maybe they should sing together after this season's over. They'd have some fans.
Lauren can sing very strongly & nicely, but she looks rather unsure, like a mouse on stage (o & pls don't let Gloria dress her again, k? tnx.) Do wish she'd stop the flirty stuff w/Steve, et al - pau already.
I like James, though he does have a pitchy-ness to his voice that can be irritating at times. The real rock & rollers are good @ scream-singing.
Paul... too thin of a voice to hold up many of his songs (Maggie May was awful), etc. but he has a nice smile.
Casey... doesn't know what he wants... but he's having fun @ it, anyway
Really don't like:
Haley (eye candy, schmye candy - growls too much & too flirty (and overconfident)
Jason Lusk (eww. just... eww)
Stefano (too nervous)
April 12th, 2011 at 3:12 pm
*Jacob (not Jason)...
April 12th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
so what happen if they lose ....they sing at church or what!
April 13th, 2011 at 10:02 am
i didn't comment on the rest of your comments... so i like steven tyler!
well i don't watch idol, but i'm a aerosmith fan. um... jlo is always gorgeous, but i'm still a little bitter she wasted ben affleck's time. that was just horrible and the two of them together is the worse part of the movie jersey girl. i miss paula b/c i just want to see her be the train wreck that she is. i miss her bravo show, too, b/c she was def THE freak show to watch.
my favorite idol winners are kelly clarkson (although in the last few years she has been biting the hands that feed) and carrie underwood. the rest are not memorable enough for me.
April 13th, 2011 at 10:04 am
oh and jordan sparks is good, too.
April 13th, 2011 at 12:20 pm
I usually like to watch the guest performers so I sometimes miss the earlier performances. I like Jlo and Tyler seems to be holding back. I think the new judges make better performers of the contestants.
I enjoy watching Haley. She reminds me of the girl from Maui.
Mcdonald????? I just don't get him. To me he ruins the songs he sings.
I guess I would have to go with James for now.
Underwood is still the best that I can remember and whatever happened to McPheever????
April 13th, 2011 at 2:22 pm
@redzone... i forgot about k.mcphee... she was in the movie the house bunny and marries a REALLY OLD DUDE and sorta disappeared!
April 14th, 2011 at 4:47 am
All I know is Petra Nemcova... Wow!!!!
Ooops, wrong show.
April 15th, 2011 at 5:21 pm
I <3 you snow! Hahaha, nah!
Agreed!
Just 1 comment Rosey???
I didn't follow that gossip. Was it J-Lo that dumped Benji boy? Was it a bad story/breakup? Anyway, I agree about Paula. LOL!
I thought the same thing too! Camile Velasco right? And yeah! What ever happened to McPheever????
Wait, she married the old dude in the movie or IRL??
LOL! What show is she on? I like set da DVR!
Nah, nah!
