Hawaii 5 (and) 0!

November 30th, 2010
By

As an avid University of Hawaii Warrior Men's Basketball fan, I have been following former Advertiser sports reporter Dayton Morinaga's new venture - WarriorInsider - with much interest.

When my Google Reader showed up last week with the title "Hawaii 5-0" in it, I skipped over everything else and went straight for the jugular. It was actually a clever play on words referring to both the Warriors' hot 5 and 0 start (with wins over Montana State, Cal State Fullerton, Central Michigan, Central Arkansas, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and the popular CBS television show by the same name... Which, oh-by-the-way, happen to be two big interests of mine.

Usually our Tuesdays are reserved for Hawaii Five-0 chatter, but with last night's episode being a rerun (already???), what better time to talk about the other 5-0 right?

Note: I don't know Dayton personally (in fact, I don't think I've ever even seen him in person), but I've heard a lot of good things about him. He has no idea I'm blogging about this today, but I've always liked his work, so I wanted to do my little part to support a fellow sports fan/journalist/(and now) blogging brutha. Gotta support da local businesses naw-mean?

Anyway, check out his web site: WarriorInsider.com and follow him on Twitter: @WarriorInsider. He's doing some good stuffs for the UH sports community. Here's one of the videos from the site that I particularly enjoyed. It's a video introduction of the 2010-2011 roster... with the players appearing in numerical order! Awesomesauce!

    hey bro,
i actually knew dayton. super nice guy. worked under him a loooong time ago at the uh sports info office. he taught me how to run an offset printing press! those were the days. he was a student writer for the sports info office and i was so happy for him when he got the job at the honolulu advertiser sports dept upon graduation. of course, it was gut wrenching to see that he was one of the writers not offered employment at the new star advertiser. kitv aired an interview of him during his last week of employ. to this day i cant understand how the #2 paper who was bleeding millions of dollars every year was able to buy the profitable #1 paper.

so i'm glad to see that he is still involved in sports journalism in some way. and what better time to blog about our mens bb team than now! they are so much more exciting to watch and its unbelievable what kind of talent coach gib has found so late in the recruiting game. its night and day between gib's recruiting class and nash's. i've never seen a uh team with so many freshmen who contribute. wiseman is the man! and we got some muscle down low and point guards who can dribble and distribute! i actually cant wait till the diamond head classic to see how they'll do. i know i'm jacked about this team cuz their games have earned a reserved spot on my dvr and i cant say that that has ever happened before. go bows!

  5. soogs:

one more note on dayton. he and another of the student sports writers invited me to join a league they were starting when i was working there. they had a book describing a new game that people on the mainland were playing. it was my first time joining a fantasy football league. it was and still is the greatest league i've ever been a part of. this was the days before yahoo had a fantasy site and stats were actually derived and number crunched from the newspaper the day after the games were played. we had a great commish who actually didn't have a team and did all the stats, league standings, draft, trades, league guidebook with historical stats, etc on his own. i keep telling my friends that this was probably the first fantasy football league in the islands (something i cant really say is totally true). gawd, its been 30+ years now. you'd think i'd know how to dominate by now. but that's the beauty of it. its a combination of knowledge and luck.

btw, sorry to kick your azz this weekend! payback for my only loss. but you gotta admit, this year is like bizzaro last year, in a good way. we both actually clinched playoffs!

  6. Seawalker:

Ed, when the basketball team wins, it seems like the entire state of Hawaii wins. It even brightens up the office with the positive chit-chat going on. Doubt if it'll top the 2007 football team's run, but hey, a winning team (with a good record) is better than a losing team. So, what's it going to take to get your tickets? Wash your car, buy you a plate lunch, or barter for a date with my co-worker?

  7. rayboyjr:

    :D :D :D :D :D Happy Lunchtime Errrr-One!!! :D :D :D :D :D

... hey Ed ... sneaky!!! ... for a moment I thought this was the FIVE-OH blog again ... but no, it's really for the Basketball BOWS ... k-den ... gotta reset my thoughts ... 'cause I was ready to sing praises about Kono again ...

... but actually ... I missed last nights show ... I was ready to go view it online ... to chat about it here ... only to find out it was a rerun ... yeah, WASSAP WIT DAT?!! ... one of my co-workers mentioned networks like to do that doing "slow" veiwership periods ... I guess after Thanksgiving weekend is slow ...

... about the other 5-0 team (Bows that is) ... I think it's great ... but I reserve commentary on how good they are ... because their opponents are a question mark at best ... but hey, 5 and oh is 5 and oh no matter who you play ... and you gotta luv winning ...

    ... Have a Good One Everyone!!! ...

  8. NeedaHobby:

Glad to see the team off to such a great start! Especially after they were picked to finish at the bottom of the WAC. Agree with earlier comment about promising freshmen. Bo Barnes looks impressive. What year is Thomas?

Ed, are you coming to Maui next month when they play Chicago St? Um, free tix? Kidding, of course ... :p

  9. NeedaHobby:

Disappointed H5O was a rerun last night. Actually, tuned in to watch it live but ...

Disappointed H5O was a rerun last night. Actually, tuned in to watch it live but ...

I actually just came home from work and thought I would catch up by rewinding the recording on the DVR. Then discovered it wasn't recorded and panicked! Whew! It was cause it was a rerun... *sigh*

  11. soogs:

just remembered something. dayton would be your kinda guy as he covered MMA at the 'tiser. they sent him on location to bj's fights sometimes. along with that he had the ocean sports beat as well as being a staff writer for uh football.

and sorry, no mo' geeving chance since its almost playoff time. worried about ap, though.

  12. che:

Are you a UH Men's Basketball fan too? Yes but I tend to only go when I get free tickets. as a kid my dad had season tickets when they were 1-26. Go Tony Wells, still one of my favorite UH players.
    * What do you think of t heir hot start? The hot start is good but they lose focus at times. But check out how many of the regular players are Fr and So. they should be really good next year.
    * What do you think of the WarriorInsider site? haven't checked it out.
    * Have you been there before? No
    * Do you know Dayton Morinaga personally? No
    * Do you remember Dayton Morinaga's work from his day's at the 'tiser? No
    * Anything special to say to him? no
    * Interested in winning my tickets to a future game I can't attend? Sure
    * Do you know why Hawaii Five-0 was a rerun already? So soon! During the holiday weeks TV viewing is down so they don't waste new show during this time. Just a guess but most of the TV shows were reruns this week.
    * Thoughts on the series so far? ok
    * Thoughts on last night's repeat episode? Missed it.
    * Alex O'Loughlin. Grace Park. No questions. Figured I'd get some feedback just by mentioning their names. Grace park is hot.

    * Are you a UH Men's Basketball fan too? Closet Fan
    * What do you think of t heir hot start? They haven't played anybody yet. We have been conditioned to see them lose all the time so now they look artificially good. I have only watched one game on tv. They have talent, but don't play team ball. Kind of like watching a pick up game. They have to learn to pass
    * What do you think of the WarriorInsider site? Just now
    * Have you been there before?
    * Do you know Dayton Morinaga personally? Nope
    * Do you remember Dayton Morinaga's work from his day's at the 'tiser? Nope
    * Anything special to say to him? What up
    * Interested in winning my tickets to a future game I can't attend? Sure, I'll come out of the closet
    * Do you know why Hawaii Five-0 was a rerun already? So soon! Unsure if it would make it?
    * Thoughts on the series so far? Good
    * Thoughts on last night's repeat episode? That Scott Caan is one lucky guy. Getting some tongue action with Grace.
    * Alex O'Loughlin. Grace Park. No questions. Figured I'd get some feedback just by mentioning their names. :P See above

eh mr. ed, been a UH fan from 1966 as a very young freshmen. Went to a few UH basketball games at HIC, crowds were sparse, and along came Nash, Holiday, Davis, and Freeman to join Pennybacker, it was an exciting time. The arena became packed and loud. We have been up and down through the years and probably the last time the state got really excited was the Carter-Alika Smith years. I usually go to a handful of games each season and watch the rest on TV. This year, been to only one game, the Chaminade exhibition that gave us a good idea of what this team is capable of. Coach Arnold has a team worth watching, and will give the WAC teams some competition...if Amis get healthy.

Watched only one Hawaii 5-0 episode, don't watch too much series programming other than some news, sports, NHK, anyways, I'm off to bed at around 9pm. From what I can tell, Hawaii5-0 should have a decent run, I like the cast, Scott Caan is a likeable character. Grace Park is very good in her role as Kono Kalakaua...couldn't they come up with a better name?
