What Ever Happened To...?

August 23rd, 2010
By

So the other week, my beloved blunt friend Todd tells me that my blog is boring these days and that I needed to spice things up. He misses how I used to post every day.

Granted posting Where In Hawaii every Wednesday has become somewhat repetitious, I had to remind him that to post that one blog a week, I still had to:

1) take the photo
2) edit the photo
3) collect and calculate the stats from the week before
4) write the blog
5) read each and every comment
6) reply to each and every comment
7) rinse and repeat

Oh, and did I mention that I wasn't getting paid a penny for this, and that my new position at work (my real job) is owning me?

I wasn't complaining really. I actually agreed that I should be blogging more, but I just had to let my friend know the dealio, real quick-like.

So here I be. Attempting to keep y'all troops entertained. ;) With Cat's shocking announcement last week, it looks like there are less and less of us bloggers doing so dese days das why! :\

What Ever Happened To...?
So in honor of Todd, who is single btw (*grin*), let's do a "What Ever Happened To..." blog today about meeting people/places. The idea behind "What Ever Happened To..." is to let us take a trip down memory lane and take a look back at how things were back in the day. If this goes well, we can continue it with different topics. Today's topic: Meeting People/Meeting Places.

When I was growing up, cruising Waiks was where it was at. We would go round and round and round on Kuhio Ave - for hours on end - in the hopes of talking to those hotties in da Honda. Some of my old older co-workers used to talk about this thing called socials where clubs/groups from one high school would go out with clubs/groups from another high school. I have no idea what that is, but the concept sounds ingenious! LOL! Anyway, in the comment area below, feel free to post your favorite place to meet people. Maybe even share the story of how/where you met your wife/husband/bf/gf? Lord knows, Todd needs the help. Ahahaha!

Are You Ready for Some (Fantasy) Football!?
On a side note, we're starting up the WWE Fantasy Football League again. If you're interested in playing with us, post your interest in the comment area below and I'll send you the invite. Last year's rankings:

1) kuya.d
2) BananaFysh
3) mypassionbucketisfull
4) Coconut Willy
5) che
6) bB
7) WWE
8 ) NeedaHobby
9) soogs
10) Stickit

Ed, please stay. We all know you are mega busy with the whole Oceanic wireless (an oxymoron? I'm JOOOOKING!!!!), so, you will stabilize at some point.

Look how much of those you have maintained hegemony over (The Grease's words, I know :)) . . . basically a lot of the "regulars" and staff, or at one time staff, of the seemingly (absolutely?) defunct The Honolulu Advertiser.

You is our favorite "ones to watch under the age of 30." So stick on here, man . . . we know it is just the beginning of this hea Star Advertiser. You are the man. Forsooth!!!!!

We'll be here . . . so you stay here, Mr! Heh, take care.

Also, how is your grandma doing?

    Howzit Ed!

    Welcome back!

  4. Chicken Grease:

Oh, hold on, now, let a Grease contributeth to today's topic.

"Whatever happened to meeting people/meeting places." Whew. Kind of a tough one because, I dunno, things tend to remain the same with this kind of thing in Hawaii. Yeah, you lose track of some people, but, you know, you know where they are and can call them or get in contact with them with the ease of a few key strokes and mouse clicks.

My friends growing up, we had parents who'd make sure we'd get the important (i.e., school work) done, but, they'd really treat us when was time to R&R . . . Fun Factory was cool, but, I dunno if they still have those sit down table arcade games (i.e., Pac Man, Galaga, Space Invaders, etc.) and cool stand up games (anyboty remember Joust?). Then there was the occasional Chucky Cheese (whose pizza isstill the überest of goods and deliciouso and scrumptiousness) gathering. I've not been in a Fun Factory for decades, so, I dunno what kind games they got now. I've been to Dave and Busters a few times, but, folks I grew up with, we go to bona fide restaurants that we would've thought so boring if we gathered there in our formative years.

I know there are places where you can still get waffle hot dog and terribly, onolicious greasy fries — necessary nourishment in my and my boys' treks to town [see, us Central Oahu siiiiIIIIIIIIDe!!!!! So, we don't much waffle dog fare back then or now] on TheBus (ooh!!! Remember my piece? Shameless plug: http://www.world-wide-ed.com/2010/03/11/thegrease-and-thebus-guest-blog-by-chicken-grease ) — and I actually tried this place in Pearl City. Was pretty good . . . I have no complaints about that. I think you can make your own waffle dog anyways.

You know . . . I used to complain about how a Zip Pac didn't taste like a Zip Pac a few years ago . . . nowadays, the Zip Pac DOES taste like I remembered it from the same adolescent time days and childhood days. Looks like Zip's must've heard the collective psionics of the masses and re-did up their Zip Pac without much fanfare (they could've easily did a "Zip Pac like how you remembered how tasted li'dat" campaign). I dunno, does anybody agree with me on this?

Through the wonder of technologies and many Internets and such, there are no secrets anymore. You can go online and find instruction or a recipe to recreate something (sans Coca Cola and other trade secrets I suppose). So, I dunno if I regret "missing" too many things nowadays. Viva la Internets.

One thing I DO miss is playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons with pals. We is all grown up and our seeming arch-beast are mortgages (not for the Grease, Grease paid his alreadies :) ), assorted bills, and other "costs."

I think we all miss a lot of things in our island past. And, heck, wasn't — and isn't — this a great place to grow up. I think we have a hard time admitting that we do miss it and an even harder time admitting to each other that we miss them. 'Fraid to get all mushy and start crying (this is a big deal for mens, of course) alla sudden. But, I think, we readers of this column, we got a lot of life to live, still, very much so. And while we're, you know, in a "things will get better" holding pattern sometimes, let's not forget that we can make things happen too. The way we want it to. Uh. Legally, of course.

Hope I answered the topic question, Mr. WWE.

    Boring blog? The solution?

    Two words: NEKKID PICS!

  6. Ijiwarui:

Ed! Blame it on the alllllccccohhoollll sorry if I was to blunt and unappreciative of your blog. I only meant that I missed reading all the interesting stuff you use to write I know you was busy checking all the WEB hotspots. Haha I remember when we all use to hang out all the time until you move out to the west side. Not so much the spots but the friends are what counts! Hope your happy sucka!

You're too busy making Oceanic commercials das why...

  8. tita leerz:

After reading Cat's announcement, I wonder whatever happened to WWE?! :( She's right, the migration to the new site isn't quite the same. Will we all have to rendezvous to where she will be migrating next? Do I hear "reunion?!"

    BTW, whatever happened to Rosie?

  9. Pris:

    Hey Ed!!

Long time no see!! So....could this the Todd I know? I'm assuming it is! LOL!!

Ahh....the good ol' days of cruising Waiks. When I think back....we did some really strange things huh? Could you imagine doing that NOW...especially with todays gas prices! haha!

As for meeting places....I really have no idea. I hardly ever go out anymore! And on rare occassions when I do get together with my gf's its usually at pretty mellow places.....my partying days are ovah!! Getting too old! But I guess you can meet people anywhere you go right? Tell Todd it will happen when he least expects it. Did I ever tell you that I'm dating an old highschool bf again? We dated a few months when we were freshman....then went our seperate ways....kept in touch for a little while after highschool...then I got married in 1994 and never seen/spoke to him again. Then after my marriage ended in early 2005....our paths crossed unexpectedly one day in 2006.....been together ever since!!

  13. soogs:

okairinasai, ed-san! glad to hear your grandma is doing ok. i'm sure she really appreciated that you and your family flew over to see her. my ba-chan in hiroshima is in her late 80's and kinda frail but she's still going. while my mom goes over at least once a year, i'm super shame that i don't visit her. last time i saw her was over 30 years ago. but i still remember that month i spent at her house sleeping on the on the tatami mats, catching japanese beetles, and taking furo baths with my late ji-chan. dayem. i'm one bad ma-go.

btw, thanks for listing last years standings. 2nd to last. sheesh. but i must be a suckah for punishment. count me in again!

  14. bB:

places that i remember in no particular order, was like cruzing waikiki in a not so nice truck or car, castle park, ice palace, mccully zippy's, fun factory, tilt, ryan's, sandy beach, etc.

on my favorite places during the uh days was sundays at moose's. remember those $1 drink nights? well don't remember too much. can't do that anymore.

best place for braddah man? if temporary sidekick, can go k bar. but something better, probably friend of friend is a better way to go. meeting at a social gathering.

  15. kuya.d:

When I think back, the best way to meet peeps was to hang out with Ed ... he knew everybody!

I miss the ohana feel ... I'm glad we have some talk story time here, but for some reason it's not the same. Like HNL2LAS says, we still have Wednesdays. And Ed, it's not you, it's us (uh-oh, the ole "it's not you, it's me"). Haha!

  16. kuya.d:

    @Leerz - hi!

    :D :D :D :D :D Good (Next Day) Morning Errr-One!!! :D :D :D :D :D

... hey Ed ... hahaha ... had to leave yesterday ... but back now ... too late to continue??? ... nah ... I could be talking to myself for all I know ... that's ok ...

... anyway ... first thing ... you are the Last of the Mohicans, sir ... my last safe haven for posting on the StarAdvertiser site ... if you leave ... sadly, I'm outta here too ... I'm sure there are other good bloggers here ... but just not my cup of tea ... *why am I using all these old phrases and cliches???* ...

... anyway, I luv'd the random blogs from you, Cat, Braddah Lance and Queen Bee Shauna ... about nothing and anything ... fun but not too serious ... *crap, am I rambling???* ...

... but no pressure on you now ... you find your own path too ... if that means the end of blogging ... that's fine ... *sob, sob* life moves on ... I just get the idea that you can't devote too much time to blogging anyway ... with wifey, job-ey, and maybe kiddie sometime in the future??? ...

... I see you're usually only posting the WIHIES Wed. post ... I enjoy that, but usually beyond my intelligence ... so I can't even make a comment ... without sounding redundant ...

... not sure what I'm trying to get at ... without overstepping my boundaries as just a reader/poster here ...

... I always appreciate you devoting time and energy to blogging ... maybe the last reason I come to read blogs here ... hope you'll continue and not have a shocking surprise announcement in the near future ...

... you DA MAN, Ed ... you da one and only now!!! ...

    ... Have a Good One!!! ...
