Fun Day Monday - Name That Band
By World Wide Ed
So last week, a friend of mine posted something on his Facebook status that got me pretty excited. He said:
"What!?! Color Me Badd and Shai are coming to Honolulu?? Time to buss out the ol' Z Cavaricci's."
I know, sounds kinda da kine to get excited over something like that, but sheez, that be some flashback memories right there (for a guy like me at least).
Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up
And when I say a "guy like me" I'm talkin' about a:
* first-CD-I-ever-owned-was-C.M.B....
* grew-up-on-these-bands-and-used-to-make-"Love-Jams"-mixes-with-these-songs-to-impress-the-ladies...
* listened-to-these-songs-on-my-Walkman-(while-the-teammates-listened-to-n.w.a.-and-nirvana)-on-the-bus-on-the-way-to-a-game...
* put-it-on-repeat-in-the-car-as-well-as-in-the-shower-so-I-could-memorize-every-intricate-detail-of-the-song...
* sang-in-groups-who-used-to-harmonize-(or-at-least-try!)-like-these-bands...
... kinda guy.
So yeah, as you can tell, I was a fan! Hearing that they will be reuniting and doing a show here in Hawaii is of particular interest.
Shai - If I Ever Fall In Love
I'm curious to know what bands excite you. We're of varying ages, races and sexes up in hurr, so I'm sure we've all got our interesting tastes in music. (And yes, though it does sound familiar, we've never had this as a topic before (I think). I checked. Feel free to include your favorite fashion stylings of those times as well!
Holla!
* Who were some of your favorite bands growing up?
* What memories do you have of those times?
* Do you remember the fashion then? What were they?
Post um in the comment area below!

Hijack This!

* Thoughts on Iron Man 2 debut?
* Thoughts on Dallas Braden's amazing perfect game on Mother's Day?
* Thoughts on the Suns' impressive sweep of the Spurs?
* Thoughts on Tiger Woods' withdrawal?
* Thoughts on a Road Runner Mobile if the device was FREE? Special starts today, just FYI...

i forget what was the first cd i bought, but i remember buying tapes and then buying cd's after i got my first cd player.
i remember buying cd's for 11.99 at tower records on sale. or even buying used ones from jelly's and rainbow books.
first real concert was mc hammer and opening was en vogue when i was going school on the mainland.
music i used to listen to was stuff like nwa, public enemy, poison, ratt, metallica, van halen, ho aikane, iz, expose, sweet sensations, etc.

Damn, I never heard that CMB and Shai were coming in concert... Is that for real? That does bring back memories! I used to rock the Z. Cavaricci's. Those were some expensive pants for a high schooler to buy. Was like $50-60 bucks yeah? And weren't you shocked when you found out that the singer from CMB was white?
I was kinda happy that Machida got KTFO. I'm surprised that Dana White cut Kimbo. Even though he sucks, he still brings in the money.
May 10th, 2010 at 5:16 am
didn't get to the see the fights this weekend, but the coverage on espn2 was good with all the highlights.
i wanted machida to win, but rua was awesome. was pretty amazing that he fell on machida and landed in the mount.
daley's cheap shot was uncalled for, but i guess there was a lot built in frustrations.
kimbo getting cut, i think we got a good try out and it didn't work out. he needs to improve and so far haven't seen the knock out power.
lucky i get braden on a couple of my fantasy baseball team. he's having a pretty good season. i like how he called out a-rod. he get some fire in him.

ok, going back to the 1960's, the Beatles were the first band I got excited about followed shortly by the Rolling Stones. I remember watching the Beatles when they first came on the Ed Sullivan show. There were many legendary bands from that era that I listened to and was especially memorable watching them live at the Civic, HIC, Waikiki Shell, Conroy Bowl and my favorite venue, Andrews Amphitheater ...bands like the Jefferson Airplane, Them, Beach Boys, CCR, Rolling Stones, Animals, Santana, Quick Silver Messenger Service, Byrds, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Young Rascals, etc. The first local band that I got excited about was the Speidels (sp?) at Wahiawa carnival, they played Ventures music like "Walk, Don't Run" and "Telstar" but favorite local band of that era was the Fabulous Spirits who did a great cover of "Gloria."
Regarding Suns sweep of Spurs...how da heck could Nash play with one eye?
May 10th, 2010 at 6:19 am

my dogs they like MOZART classical music they listen to that then they take a nap...yes my dogs napping and listening to mellow music.
May 10th, 2010 at 7:01 am
Boston would be my favorite group. They made 2 albums in the late 70's then broke up then made a third album in the 90's becuase they had a 3 record deal. Their songs remind me of good times in high school.
After watching the Spurs upset the Mavericks and the Suns struggle with a depleted Trailblazers, I thought the Spurs would beat the Suns and never thought they would get sweeped in 4 games.
Tiger's withdrawal reminds me how quickly things can change. About 3 years ago I thought Federer would have a harder time breaking the tennis all time majors win record than Tiger in golf. Nadal was the new dominant player and Federer look like he might not win another major. One injury to Nadal and Tigers problems and now Federer has broken the record while we'll see if Tiger can win another major.

well Tiger withdrawal....that is all I know....he must have hurt his back after the accident.....time to RETIRE!

As for fashion, I remember big hair and big belts! And, jelly shoes, stirrup leggings, and off-the-shoulder shirts (with the neckline cut out). The guys had mesh shoes and Bermuda shirts.

May 10th, 2010 at 10:23 am
Great topic. I REALLY like the R&B. Not much other mainstream or independent stuff I like. I like classical, quite actually, but, I ain't no vampire, so, classical music wouldn't have been the jaunt I would have grooved to as a teen.
Not talkin' The Temptations, The Four Tops, or even anything from the 1970s (many of which are very, very good), but, if The Grease talked about stuff he heard in his teen' formative years, maybe ya'll'd shriek.
Anyway, I only started really listening to R&B music (not too much of a music person here, but, R&B's kinda' good. Don't own an Ipod or many CDs, but, when these songs are played on the radio . . . oh, mercy, even the heavens start groovin' [!]) when folks like Babyface and his band The Deele came on the scene (anyone else recall the piano player of The Deele with that weird look in his eyes whilst playing and while 'Face was a-croonin'?). Great, great stuff that make you wanna' call up ya'll fav' woman invite her over for the evenin', and a-get started on a succulent brisket for you and her eat later later with rice and mac' salad . . . then, take it from there.
And no one beats Luther Vandross' vocals. Lost a great one with his passing. Except for Studdard (who still has a ways to go to be the first to create a Venn diagram w/a Vandross), there's no R&B singer like Vandross. Just dang heavenly. Can I hear ya?
Some fringe performers from R&B subsets that I like are Marvin Sease (whose albums I DO have; man, just the best, just the best. Southern Soul. Listen to his stuff, just hilarious and true at the same time. REALLY great music hooks and yarns Sease has) and one O'Brian who came about the same time as a Babyface; you just have to hear O'Brian's tunes to wonder why the heck he never became so popular or even on the metal part that encases the radar screen. He has one "Best Of" album seemingly available. Do a search on the Amazon or Barnes and Noble . . . you'll be glad you did.
The only current R&B artists (true R&B artists; all your Beyoncés, Ushers, Chris Browns [ugggghhhhh], they’re all the poppity pop versions of R&B nowadays) worth ya'll time are Maxwell, D'Angelo (who I can thank for my screen name up in hea, up in hea), Mary J. Blige, . . . maaayyyyybe Mint Condition. What ever happened to After 7? They were more kinda' contemporary jazz, though, no? They were pretty good.
Sorry . . . I don't think it's because I'm getting old, but . . . man . . . GETTING TOO LOUD THE YELPS AND WHELPS of the MMA PPV viewing crowd in the 'hood (and believe a Grease -- if you hear the name of Grease's neighborhood, you would quite equate serenity with it. Take it easy gentlemen (and some ladies) . . . relax, you've seen it before, have another cold one. Too bad for Kimbo, though . . . just goes to show there is a difference between amateurism and professionalism. Maybe he can go into acting.
May 10th, 2010 at 10:27 am
... hey Ed ... hahaha! ... WWE the MLC version!!! ... a walk down memory lane ... but not that long ago, though ...
... I used to like C.M.B. too ... but I don't think I loved them nearly as much as you!!! ... I guess I thought all the band members were gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) ...
@Pink Lady ... I loved that melody for All 4 Love ...
... anyway, I think I was more into other music at that time ... although I love all kinds ... I listened more to bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Live, Alice in Chains, Blind Melon, etc. ... come on ... don't you remember the video of the little girl dressed like a BEE dancing around ...
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7763324546201298850#
... Have a Good One Everyone!!! ...
May 10th, 2010 at 1:55 pm
@CG - yes, Luther was smooth ...
How about Brian McKnight? He's one of my current faves. And you're right ... R&B just ain't the same. There just ain't many ballads out there either.
May 10th, 2010 at 4:21 pm
@kuya - oh yeah, forgot about DeBarge. Remember the Pet Shop Boys?
I remember the Vans sh0es. Flojos? My memory is failing me ...
May 10th, 2010 at 4:24 pm
my first tape (yup cd's weren't invented when i was a yung'un) was loverboy's "get lucky". yikes, i cant believe i admitted to that! 2nd tape was the one that changed my life; ac/dc's back in black. after that, metal/hard rock ruled! and the early 80's were a great time for that genre as it gave us the scorps blackout, priest's screaming for vengeance, def lep's pyromania, maiden's # of the beast, and of course, 'tallica's kill 'em all. god, i was such a metal geek.. but in the end, as i look back at my collection, the one band that i have the most lp/tape/cd's of is earth wind and fire! i guess i had to go to the extreme to kill off the disco in me!
May 10th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
OMG, I've been MIA for so long and finally got a chance to check in. This is a great topic. Almost pau work though so I'll hit this when I get home. Gotta give me some time to think of old school jams.
If CMB and Shai are seriously coming here, I am so there
May 10th, 2010 at 4:30 pm
first cd i owned? pocket full of kryptonite by the spin doctors (still love listening to two princes!)
just found one of the tapes a friend made for me with sweet sensation and wilson phillips. even funnier is hearing the same friend singing nkotb's "tonight" along with his karaoke machine.
some day the old school harmonies will roll back into style again!
May 10th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
@frankie - I used to love DHC! I was also into Save Ferris, Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and No Doubt before they blew up.
@CG - Whoa, I really need to get D'Angelo and Maxwell on my iPod. I especially like Maxwell's "Fortunate," "Whenever, Wherever, Whatever" and "Lifetime" are just awesome. What about Avant?
May 10th, 2010 at 6:38 pm
@Hobbz - flojos were those rubber sandals with the strap on the back, and no strap between the big toe and the second toe.
May 10th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

Silk - "Freak me baby, aw yeah"
There are so many more but I guess I'll stop here

@soogs - I forgot about Stephen Bishop. Remember "It Might be You" from Tootsie?
May 11th, 2010 at 7:57 am
Mr. Unibrow himself! LOL!
Was hahd fo walk in those at first. The front would always get caught. Ahaha!
I just fired up the C.M.B. album on my jog yesterday and there were some good hits on dea! You going to the concert pinky?
Ho headbangah! Nah! You can jam on the guitar too EMMbot?
LUTHER!!! Fo sho lost a good one. R.I.P. All dem New Edition cats were pretty good. Ralph, Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike! Haha!
Bahahahaha! They weren't as "smoove" as some of the other ones, but they sure sang da hits. Still not sure how they would sound live though... Hehe!
Anybody go to his Valentine's Day concert? That must've been pretty sick!
Or maybe you're blocking it out Hobbz?
I remember that plaid hoodie thing that caught on. The tag said "This product is Muy Bueno!" I still remember that. Hahaha!
Me too big bro! Hehe, nah!
We should all go and make it an outing! LOL! Welcome back sky!
Bahahaha! I'd like to hear that. OK, on second thought, I don't! BTW, all, this isn't Rosette. It's a different "Rosie"...
Forgot to mentione Bone Thugs N Harmony! See you at the crossroads! Ahahaha!
Hence the tripping every 5 steps.
Your list is awesome sky! Some of my personal faves!

I used to listen to those classical kine when I used to study at UH. It really does help you concentrate. I heard it's soothing if you listen to it while sleeping too... So your mutts might be onto something Rosey.
May 11th, 2010 at 8:07 am
@kuya & NAH - Yeah, I got a little carried away. I started off with my iTunes and then HAD to watch some videos. Then YouTube suggested other artists and I wasted the entire night reminiscing
At some point I just had to stop.
May 11th, 2010 at 10:52 am
@ Ed: Yeah, I do play guitar. Although, ironically, my guitar playing tastes run more towards Kansas and Leo Kottke.
May 11th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
@skycastles . . . yeah, get that on ya'll Ipod . . . sorry, though, I've not heard of Avant. Skycastles . . . you must have your share of, oh, I'm going to say it . . . O.S.T.s!!!!!!!!
@ kuya d. . . . yeah, just incredible, Mr. Vandross's vocals. The nexus of reality and heaven methinks. I like Phil Collins and Sting is still very relevant in music, methinks. To this day I cannot believe his Ten Summoners' Tales got beat out by . . . The Bodyguard soundtrack? Yeah, "and IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII eeee IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII . . ." Whitney still gettin' boo'd around the globe at her concerts as we speak?
@ EMM386, yes, yes, Kansas. Dust in the Wind is John Lennon's Imagine if Imagine had guts and sense.
@ all . . . wow, all ya'll is well-versed in the musicks, man.
Any other players of instruments out there other than EMM386 in WWEland? Let's make a band, have Ed be the front/singing man
. I play nothing
.
As many Hall and Oates fans that I know (should give all ya'll's a closer hint into the Grease's fav' pop time
), none seems to have that boxed set that came along around Christmastime. Would've been a great gift to give, but, I thought those supposed "hardcore" H&O fans I know would've had the thing already. Anybody got that? Care to give a reivew?

By the way, that Frankie Goes to Hollywood Relax was (still IS, methinks) somethin' else when it came [really, really, really not intended as a pun] on the scene. Is it just me or did that song, like, knock the heck out of Rock Lobster as the "none has an excuse to stay off the dancefloor" dance hall or school dance tune?

@Ed - Jermaine Jackson had the song that went, "why don't you do what you do when you did what you did to me?"

And how about Jermaine's boys, they had a group called 3T ... I liked their song, "Anything".

Oh, kuya.d!!!!! The other talented Jackson . . . Jermaine. Do What You Do. The music vid' was pretty tight with the Sicilian theme, Jermaine lingua'g. the Italian language. Very convincing. Poor Iman, though . . . they take her character to go sleep with the fishes and such? Video wasn't too cear on what happened. The whole vid' should've been parlayed into a feature film. I can see Jermaine in the whole slew of things in a Mafia war (not to be confused w/you fans of the FB thing). What'd Dennis Hopper's Clifford Worley character say in his last moments in True Romance, now (skycastles, help out here please)?
Then there was Dynamite. 'Nother great music vid' from him. The part with him and the dancers jumping from prison cafeteria table to prison cafeteria table was pretty neat. Looked dangerous, but, pretty neat.
I guess when you were a Jackson trying to gain ya'll own fame @ the same time Jacko was the King of all things pop, you would be obligated to craft watchable, exciting music vids yourself.
Great mention, there, kuya.d.
