Mahalo, Edward fo' chance to fill in.. am pretty suah dat WIWIES gang has held down da faht in yo' absence.. I know I been holdeen' down da faht fo' fah too long, myself..

Key den. So does Life imitate Art? Does yo' Life imitate Art? Who is dis Art guy, anywayz? Do you use movie/TV show quotes or song lyrics in everyday conversation to capture a feeling or express a thought? Do you have faves that show up over and over again? I do. Maybe you do, too..

Like when something is getting repetitive or boring.. "went to the White House, uh-gain, and met the President, uh-gain".. from Forrest Gump..

And when something requires a predictable, methodical approach.. "wax on, wax off".. from The Karate Kid..

Or when the variables in a situation appear to be lined up in our favor.. "So, we got that going for us, which is nice".. paraphrased from Caddyshack..

And when it's time to maybe give up and move on.. "you got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em".. from The Gambler..

But when someone is identifying a problem, but not really offering a solution..

"I'm drowning here, and you're describing the water!".. from As Good As It Gets..

Or when you just want a laugh.. "Dese Two Yout's" from My Cousin Vinny..

So here's a Grab One/Leave One/Get Reel Movie Quote Quiz.. try grab one of these obscure quotes from well-known films, identify da Movie, Charactah or Actah, whatevah.. also, try add one too, so we ken keep da game goin' jus' in case..

Oh, an' don't fo'get yo' fave Reel Life quote..

To get started, here are ten obscure quotes from films that you probably saw on TV, maybe more than once, depending on if you get cable or not..

  1. "Correct-amundo! And that's what we're gonna be, we're gonna be cool." (1994)
  2. "Why we're on this mission, we'll never know." (1996)
  3. "Here's somebody who's got it all figured out." (1994)
  4. "If you're reading this, then you've gotten out." (1994)
  5. "If you hurt her, I'll kill you." (1996)
  6. "We deal in lead, friend." (1960).. and what foreign film is it adapted from?
  7. "Sell crazy somewhere else. We're all stocked up here." (1997)
  8. "Well, we're not in the middle of nowhere, but we can see it from here." (1991)
  9. "I like to say a prayer and drink to world peace." (1993)
  10. And finally, the last line from a Sci-Fi Mystery-Thriller in which Angie's buddy puts in a particularly strong performance as a complete wacko.. "My name is Jones. I'm in insurance".. (1995).. bonus points fo' dis one..

So, go fo' it WIWIES Gang! Try Grab One, Leave One, an' Get Reel (or some variation thereof)...

... hey uncle jimmy ... ahhhh!!! ... once again ... love the movies ... but don't know if my life imitates art ... or the movies ... unless it's a combo Comedy/Horror film!!! ...

... ooh ... I love the movie for Quote #1 ... gotta be "Pulp Fiction" ... one of my all-time favorites!!! ... I think he refers to something about being like Fonzie, right?!! ...

... here's mine ... from another one of my ATF!!! ...

"What are you waiting for? You're faster than this. Don't think you are, know you are. Come on. Stop trying to hit me and hit me."

... nice job on the guest blog uncle jimmy ...

    ... Have a Good One Everyone!!! ...

  3. oldshoes:

    no. one is pulp fiction.

  4. oldshoes:

    porsche.....there is no substitute

  5. oldshoes:

roads....where we're going we dont need roads

  6. oldshoes:

    no. nine groundhog day

  7. uncle jimmy:

@C-dub.. yup, you got 'em on Shawshank.. great movie, no? do you remember the last line?
"I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope".

for sure my life reflects your quote, since i've been with my katonk wife and nihon-jin relatives for 25 years now,, or as i like to say it..

i been da only haole in da room so long, i fo'got there was a haole in da room..

  8. uncle jimmy:

Correct-amundo with Pulp Fiction and the Fonz ref..
love it when Yolanda/Honey Bunny says, "i gotta pee"..

will work on yours, but i'll have to cheat..

    btw, related to this quiz..

"I know that you won't break the rules, because there aren't any".. (1985)

  9. NeedaHobby:

Loved Shawshank ... "get busy living or get busy dying".

Dese two youts! Did you say ... youts? I also liked "identical!" *slaps* and "my biological clock is ticking" *stomp, stomp, stomp*

I can't recall the quotes you listed, so how about this one. "As ... you ... wish ... "

  10. Scott:

"why we're on this mission, we'll never know"....Independence Day?

  11. hemajang:

hey, uj, excellent topic...but I not so good at quotes, memory getting Sgt. Shultz used to say, "I know nothing, I know nothing."

but #6 is "The Magnificent Seven" adapted from "Seven Samurai." Was it you who mentioned on skycastles post that TMC was showing Kurosawa on Tuesdays this month? Anyway, I went look and watched 7 samurai again and Yojimbo following that.

  12. hemajang:

Ok, I going leave one...and the movie is already mentioned above and was my favorite quote: "Easy peesy japanesey."

  13. hemajang:

@rayboyjr, sounds like your quote is from a boxing movie, like maybe Million Dollar Baby, Ragin Bull or one of the Rockys.

  14. hemajang:

eh CW, "He's so haole, he don't even know he's haole" Is that from a movie? or maybe Andy Bumatai tv specials "All in the Ohana" or "High School Daze"? "50 First Dates"?

  15. M:

    Howzit uncle jimmy! :)

I don't remember movies lines to well.....

We gotta get together when you are in town.

  16. Scott:

that haole line is from that famous surf movie from Hawaii, late 80's early 90's, I forget the name.

  17. che:

For some reason #7 "Sell crazy somewhere else. We're all stocked up here." (1997) reminds me of Jack Nicholson. I'll guess as good "As Good as it Gets".

Needahobby, "as you wish", Princess Bride?

I like "sometimes you just have to say what the fvck". it help me move on everytime I messed up.

  18. Scott:

    North Shore, 1987

  19. frankie:

  20. MakiSushi:

    Good one uncle jimmy!

Here's a song lyric I sing in real life:
    "diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks..."

  21. MakiSushi:

Here's a movie quote I try not to use in real life:

"Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer."

  22. uncle jimmy:

@oldshoes - yeah, both classic quotes from classic films..

porsche - from 1983's Risky Business, a classic coming of age flick, and Rebecca De Mornay is, well, is looking her finest and pretty much as good as a haole girl can look..

roads - from 1985's Back to the Future is not only a classic quote from a cool flick, but the last line of the movie from that scene we all remember..

and yeah, #9 is Groundhog Day, where Bill drinks a Martini & Rossi on the rocks with a twist..

    good pulls all..

  23. uncle jimmy:

@needs.. yeah, the line about bio clock and the stomping by Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny is freakin' hys-teri-cal..

@scott - yup, that line is from Independence Day by Harry Connick, jr. doing a spot-on impression of The Reverend Jesse Jackson..

which is just after he says..

  24. uncle jimmy:

@che.. yeah, "Sometimes you just have to say WTF" is an all-time classic line from Risky Biz..

which in my own life, i like to follow up with, "and just tell people the truth".. (often easier said than done, yeah?)..

interested to hear your thoughts on The Hidden Fortress.. was stunned at how many elements reminded of Star Wars first episode.. it's now on three Kurosawa faves list along with 7S and Ikiru..

  25. uncle jimmy:

aloha, bruddah, yeah, let's do lunch when back in town.. mahalo..mebbe wit' Rodney them..

  26. che:

uncle jimmy, I'll have to see if my niece can download The Hidden Fortress so i can watch it. Star Wars is one of my favorites.

  27. uncle jimmy:

@maks.. hoo, two good pulls, one song, one flick..

Diff'rent Strokes for Diff'rent - from the classic Everyday People by Sly & The Family Stone..

Another of theirs that reminds of Hawaii.. Hot Fun in the Summer Time..

film quote sounds like The Godfather, yes, no, maybe so?

  28. tita leerz:

LOL! I might as well be playing "Where in Hawaii..." Uncz, I have no idea so I'm leaving one: "Ya'll want it!"

Lil Momma said it after a Quest Crew performance on ABDC. It was funny because of the way she said it and how she cupped her hands (unknowingly) to look like she was holding scrotum. LOL!

  29. uncle jimmy:

@che.. if you love Star Wars, you're about to get a nice surprise..

  30. uncle jimmy:

@hemaz - yeah, the entire TCM homage to the 100th ann'y was quite a treat to catch Ak films never seen and revisit old faves.. Ikiru just hypnotized..
enjoyed your comment about Ak using a stable of favorites like Shimura who is now side by side in my mind with Mifune.. although Mifune was so strong in Hidden Fortress as was the girl as the Princess..

in Seven Samurai, my favorite scene is the recruiting sequence near the beginning where the Recruiter tells the Youngster to whack the new guys as they walk in the door.. and Gorobei laughs and says, "surely you jest".. as someone in career coacjing, that's just way too good..

have you ever heard of the Seven Samurai Drinking Game?
it has stuff like, "whenever someone runs real fast, take a drink".. whenever there's a scene where Kyuzu smiles, Kukichiyo doesn't make a face, or Gorobei doesn't smile, take a drink..
it's one of my ambitions to play that game someday with some good friends and some good sake..

  31. uncle jimmy:

Tita, you no need do movies, you are one movie..

an' yah, had sum pretty good laughs from ABDC.. they could prolly rename it, but.. somet'ing like PWA..

    Pilipinos Wit' Atti-tood..

oh, an' for my PIL conn-ec-tion, try look close at da kine Numbah One (an' only) Son..

  32. skycastles:

    Great topic uj!

#8 sounds like Thelma and Louise to me but not sure

  33. rayboyjr:

@uncle jimmy ... sorry ... my quote is not from a boxing or sports movie ... but I love sports movies ...

... here's another from the same movie ...

You hear that Mr. Anderson?... That is the sound of inevitability... It is the sound of your death... Goodbye, Mr. Anderson...

... I like this one from Rocky, though ... "You're gonna eat lightning and crap thunder!" ...

  34. rayboyjr:

@tita ... how come you stay answering your own quotes??? ... :P ...

... I've been watchin ABDC too ... but, I think some of the things they say in their critiques is nuts ... like when JC says "Crispy!"

... enjoying this season, though ... better than last year!!! ...

  35. Rodney Lee:

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

  36. Rodney Lee:

    Ferraris... Italian trash.

  37. hemajang:

@rayboyjr #31, Mr. Anderson? could that be "Matrix"?

  38. snow:

nice job on the guest blog, uncle jimmy! and to the previous guest bloggers, you all did great too! i just caught up with everything yesterday... and then the blogs went down so my comments got lost in space! :(

i'm not good with movie quotes! well, besides the ones everyone knows... like "life is like a box of chocolates... " uji, the very cute boy in your picture (your son?) reminded me of my nephew - saying a movie quote - when he was four! after a visit to knott's berry farm, he was playing coyboy with his new toy guns. he jumped out from behind the couch, pointed the gun, and said, "hasta la vista... baaaby!" in his best little schwarzenegger voice! he'd never said anything like that before and it was so unexpected - plus, he was usually so mellow and so goody-gooey - i don't think i'll ever forget that moment!

  39. snow:

oops, i meant goody-goody... not goody-gooey! lol...

tita - i'm just amazed you found another way to include the word scrotum in your post. ha ha! so talented! ;)

  40. MakiSushi:

Yup uncle you get'em both; Everyday People is a classic song, very cool.

and "keep your enemies closer", das Godfather, Godfather II to be precise - Michael explaining to Pentangalie (sp?) about his dealings with Hyman Roth. Godfather I and II - epic stuff. Up dere with Seven Samurai. Eh, your seven samurai drinking game sounds hilarious!

Here's another song lyric for real life application - "you can't always get whatchu wa-ant... (you get whatchu ne-eed)"

  41. MakiSushi:

@old shoes #5, "roads..." , sounds like Back to the Future.

  42. uncle jimmy:

@Maks.. kay-den, as usual, you always trip my mind with yo' picks..

yeah, SS Drinking Game is a freakin' hil-larry-us concep'.. let's play it someday when we're rich (inside joke)..

back at you with "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by Da Stonez..
BUT, what 1983 movie starts out wit' one funeral scene playing dat song?

and, for sum real deep trivia, who's the actor who plays their recently deceased frien' and never ack-chally makes it on screen? hmmm?

  43. skycastles:

    Here's a couple more:

    1. I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.
    2. Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.
    3. You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become a villian.

  44. uncle jimmy:

@skycastles.. so happy that you could find the time to weigh in.. yeah, "can see it from here" is definitely Thelma & Louise, the operative classic girl buddy film..

I keep waiting for T&L II, Da Rebound..

here's some deep truly meaningless trivia.. so the FBI agent leading the hunt for T&L (and bumping up against Harvey Keitel's local cop) is played by Stephen Tobolowsky, character actor who also plays Ryerson, the idiot insurance agent in Groundhog Day who keeps bumping into Phil Connors at the beginning of each day..

aah Hollywood, FBI boss one day, idiot insurance guy da next..

  45. hemajang:

#2. "Why we're on this mission, we'll never know." Not familiar with the quote but could this be "Mission Impossible"? ...thought it matches up.

7 Samurai drinking game? never heard of it...I won't last 15 minutes with all of the frantic running in the movie.

I leave one easy one - "There's no crying in baseball." IRL can substitute "baseball" with any sport you playing if someone whining.

@skycastles, "Thelma & Louise" one of my favorite chick-buddy film. Favorite scene is end when they driving off the cliff.

  46. uncle jimmy:

@snow - yup, gotta love "chocolates" and Forrest Gump.. the all-time fave movie.. tell peopo, ahm like Forres' Gump, not dat bright, amazing things keep happening, and even got a baby at the end of the movie..

yes, kids these days are amazing.. very cute quote from your guy at 4..

keep thinking, these youngsters are growing up with all this technology, 3D movies, cellular telephones, etc. that they all they take for granted..

thanks for kind words and sharing thoughts...

  47. skycastles:

@uj - I'm pretty sure Tobolowsky has a podcast on iTunes called The Tobolowsky Files. Haven't gotten around to listening but it's probably really funny. If I was an actor, I'd want a career like his - long and steady. Who needs the added pressure of being the lead? Too many ups and downs there.

@hema - Your quote is from A League of Their Own. One of my faves.

    Love their song:
    "Batter up! Hear that call!
The time has come for one and all
    To plaaay ball. . . "

  48. che:

#35 Rodney, that's from the Princess Bride.

  49. uncle jimmy:

#36, wow, Go Go Yubari is kewt, but one tough date, yeah?..

wud link dat scene, but waaay too intense for da kine..

reminds me of some taiwan girlz from ol' dayz.. dey da kine mos' likely to pull shahp instrument on you if things don't work out..

  50. uncle jimmy:

    @hema and sky..

yeah, "no crying in baseball" is definitely one of those quotes that regularly bleeds over to real life.. the operative quote from "league"

and another good one from that movie that friend tsuda-san pulled out the other day..

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great.. "

  51. uncle jimmy:

kay-den.. recharging with a couple new ones on top of sky's ones..

    One for da girlz..

"I will tell them, this feather may look worthless...but it comes from afar... and carriies all my good intentions.."

    And for da guyz..

"Hey batta batta batta hey batta batta batta Suh-wing batta!"

  52. rayboyjr:

@MakiSushi & uncle jimmy ... since you guys also veering off into music lyrics ... here's some from a song ... that I try to apply all the time to real life ... I think it's a good message ...

"It's not having what you want. It's wanting what you've got."

  53. Coconut Willy:

    For the kids, like me.

This isn't flying. This is falling, with style!
    To infinity, and beyond!

  54. rayboyjr:

@hemajang ... yup, yup ... it's The Matrix™ ... I just love the movie and some of the warped dialogue ... at first, some lines got me confooosed ... like this one ...

boy: Do not try to bend the spoon. That's impossible. Only try to realize the truth.
    Neo: What truth? --
    boy: There is no spoon.

    ... uhhhh ... hah??? ... ...

  55. uncle jimmy:

@rayboy.. reminds of a made-up scene from a made-up episode from da ole dayz of Kung Fu..

Blind Mastah: grasshoppah, when you can snatch stone from Mastah hand, den you new Mastah..

Grasshopper: But, Master... there is no stone in your hand..

Blind Mastah: Congratulations grasshoppah, you now second grade...

  56. hemajang:

@rayboyjr, whenever I think of Matrix, its that scene where Keanu Reeves is bent backwards dodging the bullets...awesome!

Heavy dialogue...Truth is unattainable but the process is the truth? ...philosophical gibberish.

  57. hemajang:

A quote from a movie that I've watched many times starring 2 legendary actors: "One thing in the world I hate: leeches!"

  58. hemajang:

Bruddah Lance can relate to the leeches quote from his post on Tuesday.

  59. hemajang:

uj, batta, batta, batta - is that from Bad News Bears?

  60. Rodney Lee:

@uncle jimmy. Wow, you good. I didn't think anyone would get the Gogo Yubari quote.

  61. uncle jimmy:

Nah, you didn't read the rulez.. cheating is allowed, but.. so i cheated..

eh, brah, dis blog t'ing is way hahd.. may hat off to you guyz..

mahalo fo' keeping us entahtained every day, yeah?

  62. Rodney Lee:

Thanks Uncle Jimmy. Here's an easy one: "Regulators, mount up!"

  63. uncle jimmy:

hemaz.. no, sir, Batta Batta is not BNB, hint: think high school..

but BNB is anoddah rich source wit' some very cool quotes aftah all..

here's my fave from BNB at the 1:37 mark of this clip, courtesy of the unforgettabke Tanner.. ..

kinda feel dat same way about Da Yankees..

  64. uncle jimmy:

@frankie.. yeah, have to love the original Karate Kid..

such an iconic film with simple, honest wisdom and themes, and unforgettable characters such as Miyagi-san played by everybody's favorite uncle..

use The Stork position as an analogy in work every day..

don't lean forward, don't lean back..
don't want it, don't not want it..
    stay in balance, stay relaxed..
and when the moment comes, kick as hard as you can..
    you can't make events unfold..
but you can observe them carefully as they do unfold..
and be ready to play your part and do your best..

and it isn't really even explainable why this is right.. only that it is..

  65. che:

Uncle Jimmy, #51, is it The Joy Luck Club?

  66. skycastles:

#51 - the first one sounds like it belongs to Pocahontas because of the feather, but the delivery sounds off. Hmm, gotta think about it more.

Is the second one from The Sandlot?

    #53 - gotta be Toy Story :)

#62 - first thing I thought of was the Warren G rap from the '90s, but I'm sure that's not what you're referencing

  67. MakiSushi:

I gots work to do but I cannot resist checking in to grab a few:

@skycastles #43 carpe diem - Dead Poets Society - seize the day; good one - it don't get better than dat

  68. MakiSushi:

@hemajang 57 leeches - African Queen, annodah good one

  69. MakiSushi:

@rayboyjr 52 - excellent sentiment! I no can figure it out - can you hum a few bars?

I gotta go; see yous cats laters.

  70. Coconut Willy:

    #62, Uncle Rodney. Young Guns

  71. skycastles:

@Maki - Yups, you got it.

  72. skycastles:

Here are some quotes on love:

    1. I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen.
    2. When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
    3. Kiss me. Kiss me as if it were the last time.

  73. MakiSushi:

I going leave one and den split; I live by this:

    " A man's gotta know his limitations."

  74. che:

#73 MakiSushi, this is going to bug me. I think that movie was on TV recently.

  75. hemajang:

@skycastles, "kiss me. Kiss me as if it were the last time" You know, my wife said that me yesterday. She must have seen that movie. Ha!

  76. snow:

hemajang - #75 - ha ha! don't be too disappointed that your wife may have stole that line... it's a good one!! heck, it's a great one if your wife is saying that to you! ;)

uji & che - #51 - i read that line and could immediately hear ming na's voice! i loved "the joy luck club!"

  77. kuya.d:

    @unko J - #51, swing batta batta ... "Ferris Bueller's Day Off?"

  78. kuya.d:

@Rodney Lee - #62, is that from "Young Guns"? ... aside from Warren G (wait, @Coconut Willy mentioned it).

  79. oldshoes:

51 is ferris bueller's day off

  80. kuya.d:

@Unko J - cool pic of you and your lil' man ... Thanks for your guest blog!

  81. oldshoes:

quote: "...i meant to do that"

  82. oldshoes:

...."say hello to my little friend"

  83. oldshoes:

...i had to follow my dog around for weeks, with a baggie...

  84. uncle jimmy:

kuya swingz in wit' FB's Day Off..

    Suh-WING batta!

  85. uncle jimmy:

so a long-time friend of WWE who can't get to a computer to post suggested some for those of us that only get to see animated features in theaters these days..

    1) "well boys, it's going to be sushi for breakfast"..
    2) "________ wants ham!"..
    3) "Fish are friends, not food." (i know dat one)
    4) "Slimy, yet satisfying."
    5) "The secret ingredient is... nothing!"

    Mahaloz, old friend..

  86. uncle jimmy:

a couple from one of my all-time fave sci-fi flicks from mid-80's..

"You earthlings are at your best when things are at their worst"..

    "That's apple pie!"..

and the basic plot in one quote..

"Do you seriously expect me to tell the President that an alien has landed, assumed the identity of a dead housepainter from Madison, Wisconsin and is presently out tooling around the countryside in a hopped up orange and black 1977 Mustang? "

  87. kuya.d:

    @Unko J - #81

    1) Madagascar
    3) Finding Nemo
    4) Lion King

  88. MakiSushi:

@che 74 - didn't mean to ditch out but I wasn't around. Did you get'em yet? I don't know if it was on tv recently. It's a good Callahan film.

It's pretty tough out here now. uncle, I dunno the film, dunno the actor you talking about @42. I going cheat'em pretty soon.

Of what's still out there I only know one, I think - @81-5 the secret ingredient is ...nothing, from Kung Fu Panda; annodah good movie!

  89. hemajang:

uj...thanks eh, enjoyed your post. I signing off..."may the force be with you"

  90. Chicken Grease:

Hey, hey uncle jimmy. Well. 'Nother enthralling post/situation offered up by the WWE substitute bloggers gang. Good show, indeed.

You know, we who offer up should be under an acronym of sorts. The Grease particular likes Ed's Blogging Interims (I suppose Interns would also do, though, so university days, no?) For Real, Y'all, or "E.B.I. F.R.Y." yes? (take that VHO7A ;)).

Well, love this game; love movies, but I'm no good at this game. Give me the AD&D (no, not "ADD," though by the behavior of past Dungeon M's in The Grease's past, I certainly could've sworn some of those fellows retained a bit of . . . oh, never mind) or the Stratego any day. Simply smashing to witness the rest of you all 100th Battalion/442nd Regiment for a Jeopardy cine' cat'.

I will offer a scene that is so simple, yet strikes deep into the heart of a Grease to find infinite affinity enough to accompany it with such alliteration: finishes remainder of meal from diner, calmly draws upon oncoming car . . .. Means much to me indeed.

Take care all and good weekend if Ed decides to continue the R&R.

one final one from the last scene of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome..

Time counts and keeps countin', and we knows now finding the trick of what's been and lost ain't no easy ride. But that's our trek, we gotta' travel it. And there ain't nobody knows where it's gonna' lead. Still in all, every night we does the tell, so that we 'member who we was and where we came from... but most of all we 'members the man that finded us, him that came the salvage. And we lights the city, not just for him, but for all of them that are still out there. 'Cause we knows there come a night, when they sees the distant light, and they'll be comin' home...

Mahalo again, Ed, for the opp-or-tun-ity..

The entire WWE gang is waiting for you to come home..
