This restaurant was on our regular rotation of places to eat with work buddies. Haven't gone there for a while because the last time we went, the normally grouchy lady (I'm being kind here) was having a really bad day and service was horrific, she practically threw our plates on the table and was very rude when taking our order. She wasn't there today but in a weird way, I kinda like her direct local manner. Food is very good but getting pricey and average portions. Haven't tried it but heard their oxtail soup is good.

(Ed's Note: No idea who last week's winnah was for kako mochi's Oregon game, but congrats whoevah you wuz! :P I'll update thangs for next week Wednesday, aftah I return. hemmz was generous enough to provide 2 pict-chaz this week so I took the liberty of "flashing" the second image in there for your viewing pleasure 8) )

AAAAHHHHH!!!!! i really need to get on here earlier on Wednesdays!

    @kuya= LOL

    @Takeshi=haaaayyyy... lol

  25. hemajang:

huuu, Coconut Willy too good. Think he been around da block a couple times. Restaurant is Jane's Fountain in Liliha. Congratulations cdub!

I love going there just for the nostalgia, reminds me of the places I ate in my youth - da old register, fountain counter and stools, booths, jukebox and grouchy waitresses. People go there for the saimin and oxtail soup but we like to eat family style and order their Okinawan dishes like pork w/bitter melon (goya), pork w/eggplant (nasubi) and Hawaiian chop steak. Their menu is typical local and get filipino dishes as well. Don't expect friendly service but I not complaining, place get crowded lunch time so they busy and no time for chit chat.

  26. Rosette:

so what did it say object hanging above cash register....?

did it say if the bitch serve you will get money to play joke box?

  27. uncle jimmy:

    hemaz..

    nice caricature pic..

pretty sure that i sat near you at one or other concert at HIC..

only can't quite remember if it was "upwind" or "downwind"..

those braincells have left the building..

  28. Rosette:

it got to say the lunch specials!

  29. hemajang:

@ S-Ticket get point for naming Hibari (Misora) as the singer we listened to on the jukebox. I don't remember the song it might have been "Kawa no nagare no yo ni" or "Ai Sansan" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iogxaHFP1Ac&feature=related

This real old school stuff. I grew up with aunties who love enka and Hibari Misora. I was more into rock n' roll and blues but as got older, started to listen to kinds of music including enka and Japanese punk.

  30. hemajang:

@kuya.d #12, too funny! But you know what, Hibari also sang "My Way" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaMF18YdB8w&feature=related
made famous by Sinatra and written by guess who? ...Paul Enka, I mean Anka.

Enka is a Japanese music genre going back pre WWII and Hibari suppose to be the greatest singer of Japan. Enka are usually sad, sad songs of lost love and nostalgia.

  31. hemajang:

ok, ok, get 1/2 point left for what hanging above cash register. Actually get more than one object but most prominent is what could possibly be a relative of what we ate for lunch.

@Rosette #16, good guess with folding cranes and you right, I think get that, but hanging on annodah wall.

  32. kuya.d:

@hemaz - thanks for the edumacation on the enka genre ... Sounds similar to a dirge (is that how you spell it?), those sad songs.

  33. kuya.d:

@CW - you deserve a purple light saber like Mace Windu ... because you a Jedi mastah! Good job!

  34. kuya.d:

Above the register - pig tusks?

  35. kuya.d:

    One daruma head?

  36. kuya.d:

How about the giant Pilifino fork and spoon?

  37. M:

I been to Jane's Fountain but don't remember seeing the cash register.

  38. Takeshi:

Is it a pig or a cow?

  39. HNL2LAS:

hmm guess I'll be taking a trek to Jane's Fountain soon.. never been there! Thanks Hemajang! Oki dishes sounding guuud right now!

  40. rayboyjr:

     Good Lunch Time Everyone!!!

... hey hemajang ... what da heck is everyone talking about?!! ... I'm so confoooosed!!! ... nice stumper ... at least for me!!! ... where da heck is Jane's Fountain??? ... I live here all my life and in fact, I just passed that area, like 10 minutes ago ... where stay??? ...

... and what da frick is enka?!!! ... Jiro is one enka singer??? ... Kikaida himself sing enka??? ... I know he get one guitar and can play some music ... but da buggah can sing too??? ... who knew!!! ...

... Congrats to the Winners!!! ... and good job hemajang!!! ...

    ... Have a Good One Everyone!!! ...

  41. hemajang:

Huuu, Takeshi and kuya.d close but not the giant fork and spoon part.

@uj, yeah, we probably were at the same concerts in the 60-70's...went to plenty. Think best one was at old Civic up close to Jefferson Airplanes on stage, I was outa my mind. But went to many at HIC - CCR, Stones, Santana, Chuck Berry, even Sonny & Cher.

@HNL2LAS, yeah, those old places are getting extinct. Jane's Fountain should be a museum, with all their antiques.

  42. hemajang:

@rayboyjr, Jane's is on Liliha Street, going up right before Kuakini, right hand side. Get one new Longs across the street. You gotta be old (no offense) to know enka but was big in Japan around WWII and 50's, 60's. Not familiar with Jiro but he suppose to first black enka singer...I should check him out on Youtube.

  43. Rosette:

    OH YES GOOD GUESS!

  44. Rosette:

I guess the cranky lady is sitting somehwrre wearing her disguise !

  45. Rosette:

I spy a clock on top hanging...! is that a guess for another half point?

  46. Rosette:

    http://onokinegrindz.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/janesfountain2.jpg

  47. Rosette:

I need a google map inside of restaurant! omg funny!

  48. MakiSushi:

    Is it a koi?

  49. MakiSushi:

or is it the good luck cat?

  50. hemajang:

@Rosette, not da clock, although that unique in itself, one ancient Pepsi clock. Anyway that photo reveals a lot, cannot see da register though...keep guessing.

  51. rayboyjr:

@hemajang ... ah!!! ... I know where that is ... I know L&L right next door too ... and I remember going to many of the small shops there ... except Jane's ... go figure?!! ... I must have have gone there at some point ...

... eh ... I just viewed the street view on Google Maps ... no wonder ... da sign only says "SAIMIN" ... on da window is the name Jane's Fountain ... I guess I nevah pay attention before!!! ...

  52. rayboyjr:

@Rosie ... tanks for the pics ... too bad, though ... no more points to give away ... maybe you gotta sweet talk hemajang ... with your charm and grace ... :D ... go getum' Rosie!!! ...

  53. rayboyjr:

@hemajang ... oh!!! ... I vaguely remember used to have Young's Fish Market there too ... the one that is in City Square now ... oh boy, I think that was like 15 years ago ... when they moved ... can't remember ...

  54. hemajang:

...still get 1/2 point for what prominent object above cash register, hint on #31 and #41 plus Rosie's revealing photo (no, not of her).

  55. kuya.d:

  61. kuya.d:

@hemaz - eh! Thanks for the YouTube link, that lady can sing!

  62. kuya.d:

    Bull horns

  63. hemajang:

Bull horns! get em kuya.d! Yeah, Rosie's photo can see the bull horns on the upper left, get the big picture with big kanji over it. You cannot see the old cash register, view blocked by the coke machine and column.

    Mr. Ed, final points are:

Coconut Willy - 1 point for correct location: Jane's Fountain in Liliha
S-Ticket - 1 point for enka singer: Hibari Misora, although he kinda threw off a bunch of names...but still count, yeah?
kuya-d - 1/2 point for naming object above cash register: Bull Horns

Mahaloz to everyone for playing...was fun. Eh, Mr. Ed, when you on vacation again?

  64. Coconut Willy:

That was a lucky guess. I have been in that place once and don't really remember the surroundings.

    Thanks for moderating.

  65. Chicken Grease:

Hemajang, The Grease is no good at these, but, just wanted to tell ya', GOOD JOB, man . . . register DOES remind me of a Palace Saimin eatery or whatnot. Great "where is . . ." today.

    Take care!

  66. kuya.d:

    @hemaz - woohaah! Mahalo.

@Rosie - thanks for the picture kokua!

  67. oldshoes:
