This Is How We Do: Airplanes

June 16th, 2009
By

Since bruddah ova hea has been travelin' a bit as of late, I thought that sharing our airplane habits might be a nice widdle topic for our "This Is How We Do..." series. Agree? We go!

* Book Online - one of the benefits of the glorious Interwebs is that you can use it to book your flight, pick your seats, check in, print your boarding passes, etc., all without the headache of doing it in person. I take full advantage of it, especially with the seating. There's nuthin' that makes me more antsy/impatient than sitting on a plane waiting to get off. The further up towards da front I can get, da bettah! Less waiting!
* Pack Light - if I can help it, I try not to check anything in. Not only are there extra fees these days, I just like that I can get on and off de plane (de plane) and on my way in a flash. I know, I know... it's probably easier for us guys than you ladies to pack light cause all we need is one clean underwear and we all G. 8)
* Set It and Forget It - I like to pack my bag in the overhead compartment in the row ahead (in row 11 if I'm in row 12). This way, retrieving it on the way out is easier/quicker and less of a hold up for the peeps behind me.
* iTunes - if it's a long trip, I needs ta bring my iPod with loaded up tunes. Optionally, I'll pick up a good magazine or two from the newsstand and may even bring the DS or portable DVD player.
* Sleeping Beauty - I can sleep anywhere at any time. Planes just happen to be one of these places. 8)
* Hurry up and wait - as soon as that bell rings, I unbuckle my seatbelt (my hand is already on it beforehand) and stand up in the aisle (if I'm in the aisle seat). I'd rather stand up and wait for the doors to open than be seated.
* Holla! - during the wait-for-the-door-to-open period, I turn my phone on. This wait is a good time to make calls (for a ride), check voicemail/texts, and browse the web.
* Out like trout - like I said before, I don't like staying in the plane longer than I have to. Once those doors open, I'm itchin' to get out. I become the fastest walker in the world once out on the Jetway. Why am I in such a rush? I have no idea. LOL!

Sound anywhere close to how you do? Share, share!

Book online. Yup. Nowadays, you get penalized for not doing stuff online.

Packing. I let the wife handle all that. I just gotta lay out my clothes and she packs. If I try, she will just redo it anyway. Since the kids, no such thing as packing light.

MP3, DVD, books, magazines. Check. I like the in flight magazine too.

Sleep. Usually catch a nap if the movie is junk.

Not like you Ed on the deplaning. Usually sit and wait. Used to wait till everyone exited because the kids were so little. Now, they can keep up with the flow. But still, I don't see what's the rush to get out?

  2. YN:

Fully agree booking online unless you travel internationally - sometimes the travel agency has better deals! Believe me on this one! Those buggahs! Use your elite status if you get, ALWAYS da best especially with seat selections!

*Set it and Forget it - Sooooo YOU'RE one of those people that put their luggage up front so when I get to my FRONT section seat, no luggage space since I like to get on the airplane last! LOL!

Me too - sleep is priority on the plane!!

I don't really care if I get off the plane fast unless I'm in a rush to catch a connecting flight that's leaving soon!!!

    Happy flying!

  3. bB:

i get plenty cause i travel for work, but i gotta go in work a little early today.

i agree with yn, travel agencies are the way to go with international flights. some places deal with specific airlines and they get some deals.

but, one quick tip is to empty your pockets and put it in your bag, back pack or what ever. that way all you gotta put your shoes and bag on the belt.

  4. Ynaku:

I book book online, unless my travel agent friend says she get something better.

I try pack light, but you know with family, gotta bring omiyage and stuff so no more room in carry on.

I put carry on in overhead above me UNLESS DA GUY IN THE ROW BEHIND ME PUTS HIS BAG THERE Da noive of dat guy

Me no carry ipod, ds, dvd (son get all that). I watch da movie or read da mag.

Me rather sleep. I can sleep standing up if have to. 8)

If I get checked baggage, no sense rush. The bags not going be ready. So I sit and watch the cattle stampede passengers disembark. But yeah, if I gotta catch a connecting flight, I'm outta my seat and down that aisle.

    Mahalo for flying Mahalo Airlines

  5. che:

I'm a dinosaur. Never booked a flight on line yet. Either call direct, use a travel agent or tour package.

I pack light. I don't try and bring too much clothes. Once that back fired. A friend got married in Vegas. I was part of the wedding party. groom said he was getting married in faded/patched blue jeans (his favorite pants since college) and a polo shirt. I was going to dress in slacks and a polo shirt. After landing the bride made both of use buy suites (also need to buy white long sleeve shirt and tie). the bride vacuum packed her wedding dress. I would have bet money that that you couldn't fit the wedding dress in that small box.

back to the subject. Don't own I-Pod, portable dvd player or laptop. I just watch the in-flight movie or sleep. International flights show about 6 movie continuously. If anything I bring 1 or 2 magazines, a change of clothes, camera and some candy or gum in the my hand carry.

normally wait to leave the plane and get luggage last.

All in all a boring traveler.

  6. kuya.d:

book online - I like seating toward back of plane since all the antsy peeps sit toward da front.

packing - depends where I going, how long I staying. All in all, I pack light.

boarding / de-planing habits - I almost always wait for last call. To me, feels awkward standing in the aisles when peeps trying for stuff their oversized carry ons into the overhead...errybody always look at you funny (and you not even the guy causing the hold up).

iPod - Gotta! I need better headphones though (any suggestions?).

Hana Hou magazine - awesome publication

Oh yeah, I like being close to the restroom. just because.

  7. NeedaHobby:

Good morning. Yup, yup, make the reservations on-line. Usually check-in on-line too. One thing that I don't like ... when you have to check baggage, not all airports have a "web check-in" line. So, even if you've checked-in on-line, you still gotta stand in the same line, like everybody else. Kinda defeats the purpose of checking-in on-line, yeah?

I usually have a carry-on only for interisland travel. But, if I go mainland, I check a bag. 'Cause gotta bring back omiyage.

I'm jealous of all you guys who said you can sleep on the plane! I have the hardest time! So, I don't like dem red-eyes!

Must-haves for travel - iPod, magazines, book (hubby usually brings his DVD player that I can watch). ;)

  8. kako mochi:

    my must haves:

    - tylenol pm (so i can sleep)
    - my own blanket (it's not all scratchy & i cover my face w/it when i sleep...guess why!)
    - ipod (duh!)
    - my own snacks from home (too expensive to buy in the airport & on the plane) & bottle water that i HAVE to buy at the airport :(
    - hand lotion & facial moisturizer (my skin gets VERY dry, so i'm always lubing up!)

that's pretty much my essentials...i always check a bag, but only cuz most of my trips have shopping as the #1 priority...i pack a small suitcase w/all my stuffs and put it in a bigger suitcase...i leave w/1 and come back w/2 (plus my carry-ons)!! i think the only time i did all carry-on is when i spent the weekend in maui!

  9. NeedaHobby:

@kuya - the noise cancelling type headphones seem to work pretty well on the plane ;)

  10. j-uncz..:

kay-den, since have flown LAX/HNL an' back maybe hunnert timez las' 15 years, get plenny stories..

back mid-90's wen my Mom wuz on las' legs, started a seminar program at UH an' used to fly in erry 2 weeks to teach Satahdayz, hang wit' Mom Sundays, fly red-eye Sun nite, regain consciousness like Wednesday..

lef' downtown LA at around 3:30-4 for a 5:30 flight.. in Friday rush-hour traffic.. two "cut close" stories..

so wen you like show up 15 min. befo depachah, sometime you flat out of luck.. an' no latah flight to catch.. an' peopo waiteen' da nex day fo' you show up.. hoo, exciteen'..

so dis one time, "oh, sorry eh, uncz, we jus' gave away yo seat".. bummahz.. den 2 min. latah, dey stay draggeen' dis drunk haole guy off da plane for talkeen' stick to da kine.. eh. t'anks, eh, brah? hoo, close call

da uddah time, don't even have time fo pahk da cah.. like 20 min. befo depachah an' i'm driveen' down Century Blvd., no way dude.. so I jus' resign myself to fate, try pahk da cah in the grassy area of the median strip.. so wut they goin' do, blow da cah up? no, dey goin' tow it ovah to da lot an chahge me hunnert dollah.. heck, it wud cos' sitty dollah anyway.. so wut's dat, fawty mo dollah? to see my Mom one mo time.. yeah, das da ansa.. jus' pahk 'em an' walk, bah...pahk 'em an' walk..

  11. pink lady:

i have to buy a couple of magazines (always has to be people) and a bottle of water at the airport. i also love booking online...it's so convenient and i like hunting for the best deals!

  12. Kage:

I bring a book and my iPod with movies and music. I'll read without my glasses and that will make my eyes tired.

I wish I could sleep on a plane. Even the redeye I lucky if I get 1 hour sleep on a 5 hour flight.

I tried the noise canceling headphones but the pressure on my ears kept me from falling asleep more...

I am in no rush to get off the plane. If I have an aisle seat and no one I know sitting next to me, I will get up. If it is family next to me, we wait. No sense rush. You only gotta bump and grind with everyone trying to get out.

  13. skycastles:

I book online, try to pack light, shove my carry on under the seat in front of me (need easy access to snacks and iPod), watch the movie, try to sleep but most times cannot and take my time getting out unless gotta pee bad. I hate using the airplane bathrooms.

But way before that, I'm all about the faretracking at yapta.com, especially if I know far in advance when and where I'm going. You plug in your dates and locations and it pulls up a list of flight times. You can track individual flights or airlines. Yapta notifies you when the price changes (up or down) on the airlines' website. Think you can book through them as well but I always compare with the discount places like Expedia, etc.

I also use that msn fare predictor thing. It somehow analyzes recent prices and trends and predicts if the price will go up or down. I tried it earlier this year for a trip I took in May and it was pretty accurate.

  14. kuya.d:

@Hobbz - thanks for the suggestion. And yup, ITO used to have the self check in on the side, but not anymore, so waste time check in on line.

@moch - good one with the bottle water, I buy one at airport too, that and m&m's.

  15. BananaFysh:

I gotta ask -- Who buys those "adult" magazines at the news stand at the airport? :?

All I know is, I don't wanna be sitting next to THAT GUY on the plane!

    EEEEW!

That's why I no use the blankets on the plane.
    haha!

  16. Kage:

@Banana- I saw one guy reading da kine magazine on the plane once when I was walking back to my seat from the bathroom. I thought to myself, "oh, so dats da kine guy buy dat kine magazine...."

Then I too said to myself, "good thing he not sitting next to me."

  17. BananaFysh:

@Kage -- Did that guy happen to put his carry-on in the overhead compartment above the seat in front of him, and then as soon as the plane stop, he hurries up to get off the plane? :?

He no like get busted with the magazine, but too late!

    Caught in the act!

    * kuya.d:

    * NeedaHobby:
I'm jealous of all you guys who said you can sleep on the plane! I have the hardest time! So, I don't like dem red-eyes!

@Banana- come to think of it, he did look familiar like I seen his picture somewhere before..... Like everyday on my computer screen.

    Nah, Ed jus keeeding.

  22. snow:

i try to book online - haven't booked with an agent for a while. i would only book with an agent if it were cheaper, which is rarely. i love that if you have a hawaiian miles credit card, you can always pick your seat assignment on hawaiian (sometimes you have to call, though). once, i booked a last minute flight for my niece on the same flight my family was already booked on - her ticket cost over $300 less and we were able to get her a seat right next to us!

i try to pack light but an generally unsuccessful. my idea of "packing light" is staying within the 50 lb. weight limit! (well, of course, not for neighbor island trips!) i must be prepared, i must have everything on my trip! even my carryon is heavy... snacks (for the whole family!), water (that i buy at the airport, like kako mochi, but i find so annoying!), jacket (i always get cold), magazines (in case i can't sleep), meds (must have eye drops, saline), moisturizer, purell, hand wipes, zip loc bags. the carryon's gotta go under the seat in front of me for easy access!

i don't always stand up after a flight or stay seated... kind depends on how long i've been on the plane, if i've got to get out in a rush (to a connecting flight) or if i'm so stiff from being seated for so long, i can't take it any more. i can't stand people just about push you out of the way so they can get off faster (i can understand if you've got a connecting flight but a simple "excuse me" would do wonders!)!

  23. EMM386:

Definitely have to book online. Its one less idiot to deal with in life. That's why I do all of my banking online/by atm too. Must have my ipod, DS and PSP with me. Even if you legally own and bought the games, its better to put them on an R4 (DS) or homebrew your PSP so that you can take multiple games with you without the added hassle of multiple carts/UMDs. I also like to have a book to read. Other than that, nothing really bothers me. Check that. The last time I went to Hilo, the lady in front of me was walking super slow on the jetway and didn't leave any room to overtake her on either side. By the time I got on, the lady in front of me was literally the only person standing on the plane besides the flight attendants. Never, never, never saw that before in my life.

  24. tita leerz:

I book on-line because sometimes, I get routed to the motherland when I gotta call customer service. Sometimes, I cannot even understand my own people that I want to tell them, "here, speak to my mom in the native tongue" so that the message can get communicated to me better! LOL.

With little kids, forget about packing light and being the first one off the plane! Oh yeah, and don't even think about trying to sleep either!
