  18. Ynaku:

Hey Kuya. You get um on the first try. ITO Hilo Airport. I can see that 3 lava spears looking thingy that SUPPOSED to represent lava trees but looks more like.... um...... some part of a male anatomy?????

    Bwahahahaha

Das what I get for going on the roof to take weather pics to send to Malika Dudley for her Sunrise on KGMB broadcast.

Shoots brah, I was sleeping when you posted this.

  19. M:

  20. NeedaHobby:

    Auright kuya!

@Ynaku - you too funny!

So, question ... why is the call letters for the Hilo Airport ITO?

  21. Paco:

Kuya got it covered. Easy one this week...even I knew 'em!

  22. kako mochi:

all i know is that it's on the big island!

  23. Coconut Willy:

    Hey Naks,

I saw a Hilo shot that Malika showed this morning. Was that yours?

ITO is some guy who had something to do with the Hilo airport? I think it's the ONLY airport with call letters named after a person.

  24. Ynaku:

Hey CW, dat was me. Now I busted  Took it from the roof of our office. Nice day today

  25. jknakas1:

My guess would have been Kona Airport, but Hilo sounds even better!

@NeedaHobby: I think it's named ITO because of some past director, or worker, or something, at the Hilo airport that made some kind of big contribution to it years and years ago. His last name was Ito.

  26. Center Of Thought:

Coconut Willy, I also think Kahului Airport, Maui, was designated as OGG in honor of aviation legend, and Lihue native, Capt. Bertram J. Hogg, and the Kapalua Maui airport code name JHM stands for John Henry Magoon, who was president of Hawaiian Airlines when that airline developed the Kapalua airport.

...a little 50th state civil history haha

  27. skycastles:

You guys left out the zoo! :)

I went a couple years back and never even know you had one till then. Loved all the peacocks strutting all over the place and your white tiger Namaste.

  28. skycastles:

@ kuya - Volcano Winery is pretty cool! We missed it on the drive into Hilo but stopped on the drive back to Kona. Ended up shipping some back to Oahu. Yum!

  29. EMM386:

Kuya definitely got it. It's the Hilo Airport. Can tell by the a-frame building in the background.

  30. tita leerz:

thanks for the trivia! i always wondered about the OGG and ITO.

  31. hemajang:

Clueless on this one and congrats to kuya.d, assuming he got it right. They landscape and maintain that area beautifully but that loud, aloha-tacky honu sculpture thing sticks out like a sore thumb.

  32. snow:

@Lourdes - that wine you have is kinda sweet if I recall correctly. And I bet you just never found a grape based wine that suits you, get sooooo much out there...one day you'll find one you like.

  71. matt:

    @kuya.d
maybe closed now, but I know used to have an aquarium out there. pretty sure it was out a little past 4 mile, but could have been a little closer to town. was really small, but was open to the public and everything. like I said, maybe closed now.

there's always the noaa thing over on bayfront now. they're open to the public and have fish tanks inside.

  72. kuya.d:

@matt - thanks for the info. and that NOAA place is definitely pretty cool.

  73. Coconut Willy:

@matt - was that Richardson Ocean Center? By 5 miles.

(Only in Hilo can you describe the beaches as 3 mile, 4 mile, 5 mile)
(And they are poor excuses for beaches)
