OK, so I think I did it! After months of persistence, I think I've finally secured that interview with BJ Penn! Much love JD! Gonna be flying up to Hilo this weekend, but before I do, I wanted to check in with all y'all MMA fans (or fans in general) to see if you had any questions for the UFC Lightweight Champion of the Woooooorrrrrllllllld! 8)

Post um below and I'll take the best ones up with me! Wish me luck! :)

On a side note, if you have any suggestions for places to grind in Hilo, please post those as well. Shooots!

    Hey Ed - congrats on getting that interview! Have fun in Hilo.

  2. Syxx:

    Oooo...I miss my Hilo food.

    Ken's House of Pancakes: Yeah, may be over-mentioned and overhyped, but still something you gotta do when you go to Hilo. Plus they open 24/7 so it's like Zippy's. I really remember the Loco Moco being really good though.

    Nori's Saimin and Snacks: Being a Hilo kid, no saimin here will ever taste as good as Nori's. Ever.

    Hilo Lunch Shop: A nice little okazuya. Can't go wrong there, except I think you need to get there by 9 to get all the good stuffs. By lunchtime, everyone's taken all the choice pieces.

    Itsu's: Shave ice and hot dogs with steamed buns. Sounds weird, but steamed bun hot dogs...oh my. So soft and sweet. Plus, the nicest people you will ever meet work there.

    Ok, I haven't been to these places in about 6 years, but they're childhood favorites and I'm sure you'll find something you'll like. Nori's at least is a winner, can't go wrong there. Hope you have fun and don't forget your umbrella!

  3. kuya.d:

    @Syxx - naming all the classics from Hilo.

    @Ed - all depends on what you feel like.

    Try asking BJ how helpful Gary Ohashi has been in his training and recovery?

  4. Coconut Willy:

    Ummm, Syxx. That's Ice Shave!

    Originally being from Hilo, the feeling is super laid back. I know when I go to visit, I get really lazy. Ask BJ how he keeps up his intensity and motivation.

    Neva have Nori's when I grew up. Kawamoto Okazuya is my favorite. Also Koji's bento corner for loco moco. Although I was a little disappointed the last time I went.

    And blogging on a Holiday? You so dedimacated.

  5. HNL2LAS:

    Ohhhh Ed, how exciting! I'll just be happy with the pictures and interview when you're pau! No questions! hee hee..

  6. skycastles:

    Question for BJ:

    Boxers or briefs?

    :lol:

  7. skycastles:

    Nah, serious now.

    What advice would he give to kids coming up who want to get into MMA?

    Where does he see himself and the sport in 5, 10, 20 years?

    Any local guys we should be watching for who might be making the move to the big time soon?

  8. kuya.d:

    @CW - kawamoto's is da bomb! Asami's Kitchen across from Ben Franklin has the best fried chicken in Hilo nowadays.

  9. Ynaku:

    Sorry Ed,

    Just came home. We went off-roading to Green Sands Beach South Point. Truck had a mean work out today. Roads buss up and dusty. Plenty tourists brave to walk in about 3 miles. We seen them all dirty and they look at what they came to see and 8O Small beach and gotta hike down.

    Anyway, Hilo Grindx as Syxx mentioned. Also get Cafe 100. You like eat 1 lb laulau? Can go Kuhio Grill across Walmart by Starbucks and Jamba Juice. They get what they call Kanak Attack. Laulau Kalua Poi, Chicken long rice..the whole works. Prob get polynesian paralysis afta dat.

    Over by Walmart side, get One plus One for Vietnamese food. Also get Hilo Rice Noodles on Kinoole St. by Kawates seed show. I don't think they open weekends though.

    I'm not really into MMA so have no questions for BJ.

    So when you plan on being in Hilo?

  10. bB:

    i don't think you have to worry about food. kuya and ynaku got your back on that one. now, i'm in the mood for a gravy burger. :lol:

    i'm kinda of j you going be interviewing bj.

    questions for bj.......

    who would his dream opponent be?

    does he have any aspirations of being a promoter after he retires? maybe something on the lines of a oscar de la hoya.

    personally, i think mma fighter are grossly under paid compared to boxers. do you think in the future that something will be done to fix that? and if so, what needs to happen?

  11. bB:

    btw, did you see the machida fight?

    that was impressive, it was worth the money.

    even my dad was impressed and he doesn't watch mma.

  12. M:

    Good Morning Ed!

    Congrats on getting the interview!

  13. frankie:

    Ask him if he can train your ol' pal Frankie how to bring the pain!

    But seriously, I'd like to know if he'd like to face GSP again (sans the greasing) and what he thinks of Machida, since he fought him when Lyoto was still laboring in obscurity.

  14. uncle jimmy:

    ok, since we're asking questions.. how're 's these..

    since he's in a brutal sport and a bright guy..

    when do you get out, how do you get out, and where do you go when you do get out..

    i.e. is there a time and place to move on gracefully to the next stage of your career, and how do you know when?

    the unspoken paht.. (befo' you turn Scottish an' "get kilt")..

    let's find out how really smart he is..

    Ed, will leave to you to figgah out how wit' diplomacy and discretion..

  15. Center Of Thought:

    Nice interview Ed - Dude! It's BJ Penn haha

    1) What does his diet consist of? What does he eat when training?
    2) What does he do in his downtime (for fun)?
    3) what kine music does tha champ listen to?

    Anyway, he already knows this, but make sure dude knows how proud he makes us!

  16. World Wide Ed:

    * Syxx:
    Nori's Saimin and Snacks: Being a Hilo kid, no saimin here will ever taste as good as Nori's. Ever.

    Woah! That's a vote for Nori's if I've ever heard of one Syxxy! I'll check um out fo sho. Mahaloz for the tips!

    * kuya.d:
    Try asking BJ how helpful Gary Ohashi has been in his training and recovery?

    Is that his chiropractic guy? I love how BJ gave him props on his show. Always loyal. Love it.

    * Coconut Willy:

    Oooh, good question C Dubbs!

    Hehe, yeah, same here. I can't wait to see what we come up with. I really wanna hype BJ... the man who makes Hawaii proud. Ooh, I think I may've come up with a title. ;)

    * skycastles:
    Boxers or briefs?

    LOL! Um... You like me get dirty lickins or wot sky?

    * skycastles:
    Nah, serious now.

    Where does he see himself and the sport in 5, 10, 20 years?

    All awesome questions sky! 3 out of 4 ain't bad. :P

    * Ynaku:
    So when you plan on being in Hilo?

    Mahaloz for the tips! I'm actually flying up this Friday for a one nighter (just for the interview). Coming up again in a few weeks with wifey. That's probably when we'll have more time to try some of those places you guys mentioned. Maybe you, me and kuya.d can meet up if the schedules match up? 8)

    * bB:
    personally, i think mma fighter are grossly under paid compared to boxers. do you think in the future that something will be done to fix that? and if so, what needs to happen?

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this! I will definitely add this one to the mix. Mahaloz beeBz!

    * bB:
    btw, did you see the machida fight?

    Had to go to a grad party that night, but was able to catch that last match at the house. I have just two words: Holy ____! It was super impressive! Evans was like OUT! Makes me want to take up karate again. LOL! I still want to see how Machida would do if he's tagged a good one. He's so elusive that nobody's really caught him clean. I wanna see what kind of chin he has.

    * M:
    Congrats on getting the interview!

    Mahaloz M! And mahalos for the Tin Man tips!

    * frankie:
    But seriously, I'd like to know if he'd like to face GSP again (sans the greasing) and what he thinks of Machida, since he fought him when Lyoto was still laboring in obscurity.

    I think I'll stay away from the GSP questions, but a Machida one might be a possibility, esp with his recent fight. 8)

    * uncle jimmy:
    Ed, will leave to you to figgah out how wit' diplomacy and discretion..

    Hahaha! Yeah, no get me in trouble ooj! ;)

    * Center Of Thought:
    Anyway, he already knows this, but make sure dude knows how proud he makes us!

    I like the personal stuff so I'll add these as well. And yeah, I'll be sure to tell him how proud we are of him! Mahaloz COT!

    Keep the questions comin' y'all!

  17. uncle jimmy:

    oh, yeah, couple more.. since his grandma was the original "little lei lady of waikiki" and wound up owning some chunks of waikiki in the process, and his Mom is a serious entrpreneurial player of note on her own..

    does he have a similar entrpreneurial gene and how does it reveal itself?

    hoo, cool interview..

  18. skycastles:

    * skycastles:
    Boxers or briefs?

    LOL! Um... You like me get dirty lickins or wot sky?

    --------

    @ Ed - Aw c'mon, inquiring minds wanna know! Just take one for the team.

    :lol:

  19. uncle jimmy:

    Edward..

    kay, try tell'em, the story is that all the boys in your family get the same name.. Jay Penn.. kinda like George Foreman an' his keeds.. so..

    how your parents no get confused?
    does that have anything to do with your going into MMA?
    did you have to beef your brothers even for your name?
    what impact did having all older brothers have on you growing up?

  20. World Wide Ed:

    * uncle jimmy:

    Another good one ooj! My guess is he probably does.

    * skycastles:

    Bwahahahaha! So mean! :P Nah! I'll feel him out. If he's game, I may just bust this one out, but blame you! ;)

    * uncle jimmy:
    kay, try tell'em, the story is that all the boys in your family get the same name.. Jay Penn.. kinda like George Foreman an' his keeds.. so.. how your parents no get confused?

    I always wondered that. More so for the Foremans though cause each of the Jay Penns get unique names...

  21. uncle jimmy:

    Edward..

    eh, so wut name did you make up fo' BJ?...yo' spesh-al-ty.. :lol:

    eh, da Pills need to go get Jake P., yeah?

    da pitcheen' sux dis yeah.. guud t'ing we get da beeg batz, yeah? :lol:

  22. skycastles:

    @ Ed - I got you a solution to your problem then. Just create a section of the interview that is WWE Ohana questions. That way you can also add any "non-newsworthy" questions you been itching to ask too. But I gotta say that I think my question is pretty darn newsworthy . . . like TMZ newsworthy! Hahahaa! Oh and add on last week Friday's 5 talents question. It'll be interesting to see what he'll pick as his talents.

  23. World Wide Ed:

    How about "Sir" for BJ's nickname? Haha, nah!

    And yeah, if they can pick up Peavy that would be sick. We need da help in the arm department. Is dat what the rumor is?

    * skycastles:

    Interesting... other than BJJ right? 8)

  24. mcat:

    hope the interview goes well! can't wait to read it!
    love bj! :)
    i'm curious what he does when he's not training... any other hobbies?

    Yeah, I'm gonna see if I can get a little more personal than just the surface level MMA stuffs. Mahaloz for da feedback mcat!

  26. miLL-viLLe:

    pretty impressive that Penn lasted longer in his fight with Machida than Rashad did on saturday. I want to know how many more fights BJ has left in him. He's still really young, but if he has no desire for it he should retire. After watching him fight at 170lbs against GSP this last time, I'm more convinced then ever that he's too small to fight at welterweight. Nowdays, all fighters are becoming much more well-rounded than in the past. In the old days the smaller fighter could defeat the bigger guy easily, but that's not the case nowdays. I think that played a big role in why Matt Hughes was able to dominate Matt Serra on the ground. Serra is a natural 155lbs fighter but fights at 170 because he doesn't like cutting the extra weight.

  27. uncle jimmy:

    Edward:

    Raul Ibanez leads all NL outfielders in home runs (17), RBI (43), slugging (.750), runs (38) and his fourth in batting average (.345).

    But in All-Star voting, the Phillies left fielder is currently sixth.

    Got any ideas for how to correck dis tar-rib-ble sitch-ea-tion?

  28. kuya.d:

    @Ed - very good, you heard of Gary, that's my pal/chiro guy too! He gives me scoops on Beej, and that's probbly the last place I ran into him.

  29. snow:

    congrats on getting an interview with bj, ed! dreams come true, eh? ;)

    no questions that i can think of... just convey the big love and support for our local boy!! i know way too many people (men and women!) in his corner! :)

  30. Syxx:

    @Ynaku: Kuhio Grill is still open?! I guess Ed needs to make a trip there. Loved the fried rice, personally.

    @Coconut Willy: Okay, Okay ICE SHAVE, but I've been living in Honolulu too long. Assimilated, I guess.

    Sorry my list is kinda generic. Last time I went home, everything was shut down and I didn't think anything was open anymore. Mun Cheung Lau I heard closed. I remember a something-mart by the duck pond place that had good sandwiches, but it might be closed. Never was a fan of Don's grill, and I heard Fiasco's closed. I could say Verna's, but last two times I went there, I got food poisoning 8O
