Survey Thursday - The Story Behind Your Nickname?

April 30th, 2009
By

* What's the story behind your online nickname?

Creating an online persona is fun for many of us and our online "name" is just one part of that fun. Some of us use our real name as part of our "handle" or screen name (e.g. frankie, Kel. Sr., rayboyjr.), while others go with something totally off-da-wall (e.g. MoOgooGuypAN, BananaFysh, S Ticket). This blog is meant to uncover the mystery that is your name, while giving you a chance to share a little more about yourself to the WWE `ohana. And no worries, even if your name is pretty straight forward (e.g. NeedaHobby, HNL2LAS, hemajang) we wanna know the real meaning and why it's significant to you. Dig down deep folks. :)

Speaking of hemajang, he recently asked this question to me:

The big question for me is...how come WWE when most of your posts are local specific?

Which prompted me to dig this one out of the idea box and post it! So here we are. Check out the meaning behind my name below and den post yours k? Shoots!

World Wide Ed was actually a nickname I had back at UH (that, and sedward, the UH email account name I had at the time). I was a columnist for the Ka Leo O Hawaii student newspaper and wrote a column under the same banner (World Wide Ed), for its similarity to the phrase World Wide Web, a topic in which I covered. That's pretty much it. Kinda boring, but I'm sure the stories behind your names will be much more interesting. Share share!

P.S. To make things even more interesting, try and take a stab at guessing the meaning behind someone else's name too. *grin* Or what about explaining your "other" nickname(s)?

    and ya doesn't has ta call my beah anhueser..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Egr3HFB7hc4

    :lol:

  2. kuya.d:

    My current handle is influenced by a previous Survey Thursday question, the age group one. As I was joking around with Leerz, I reminded her that I was older than her, so I could be her older brother.

    In Tagalog, kuya is used as a term to address an older male sibling. And the d stands for my first name. If you look back in the WWE archives, my name is there before this handle was created.

  3. che:

    che, is just mey initials. Not too creative.

  4. hemajang:

    Nothing significant other than it one old local slang and it fits, what can I say? Been using it for a while before blogging when playing in cribbage game rooms.
    Hmmm, Sedward's World is nerdy good or SugiWasHea for your Where In Hawaii is Ed? segment. Yeah kuya.d, I like Tita Leerz's handle. She sounds like her name...could Leerz be Lourdes? I happen to know that TwoFish is from Dr Seuss's One Fish, Two Fish. BananaFish is a distant cousin.

  5. Ynaku:

    Ynaku stands for something very creative. NOT!

    Ynaku = Wainaku (How creative is dat?)

    Wainaku is on the north side of Downtown Hilo. Considered country yet so close to town. Known for it's Sugar Plantation and mill. Peaceful like me :lol:

  6. frankie:

    What are you talking about? My real name is Bob. ;-)

  7. bB:

    I didn't know what name would be good cause all different kinds. So I just picked a car that I like in japan that has a "twin" in the states. But they stopped production on this model over here.

  8. kuya.d:

    @hemaz - Lourdes! Hahaha! . . . Wait! What if it really is Lourdes? Hahaha! (Nah, Leerz! I know it's not, at least I hope not). And hemaz, she does match her tita-ness, at least back in the day she did.

  9. MakiSushi:

    My name reflects my fondness for this disappearing food item, going the way of the okazu-ya. I could be ConeSushi too. It's a meal in itself, I can eat a roll or two in a sitting and be satisfied. Gotta get my fix from the Kabuki counter in Waimalu. Reminds me of old times.

  10. NeedaHobby:

    Like you mentioned, Ed, my on-line name is pretty straight forward. At the time I started blogging, I was looking for a new hobby. So, have I found a new hobby? If blogging counts, then yes. Thanks for making my days interesting ;)

    BTW, thanks Ed, for my nickname. I think it's pretty cute cool that you give everyone nicknames :razz: Kinda like Sawyer on Lost, yeah?

    Hmm, I always wondered why snow, was snow?

  11. M:

    Good morning Ed! :)

    My screen name is the first letter of my first name, not creative at all.

  12. pink lady:

    Grease is my favorite movie!!

  13. soogs:

    you know mines comes from my last name. although i've also been called many other variations of it (most of which is unprintable), everyone that knows me either uses this or just sugi. even my wifey and in laws prefer to use my nickname. wuz funny when one of my wife's cousin's got our wedding invite in the mail and called my mother-in-law up right after asking, "who is this guy on the invite? i thought she was going to get married to soogs?!"
    in response to your previous post, yea, our names are a little diff. but we're not as rare anymore. 30+ years ago, i remember looking in the phone book and seeing just a half of one column of us. now, i think get over half of one page. lookout lee's, chang's and smith's, the soog's are a-coming!

  14. tita leerz:

    My new screen name will now be Lourdes. LOL!
    Hema..you sooooo faaaahhhh! Maybe my name is really just Lee that Ed tweaked with his "rz" addition. I first came on with another Lee handle.

    Sawyer Sedward gave me Tita because of my wise @s$ answers and the attitude of the girls that come out of this zip code. For the record, on a scale of 1-5 for tita-ness, I'm just a 1. :)

    If I were to rename myself, it would probably be "Otot."
    ha ha made ya laugh!

  15. tita leerz:

    or "Oh-Tot"
    BTW, I like Hemaz suggestions: SugiWasHea.

  16. uji:

    so my name wuz always jimmy cuz Dad was jim, ack-chally big jim.. only family uses dat.. now the six kids get fawteen mo' kids, get more nieces and nephews than anything else.. we have hapa-dis, hapa-dat, even hapa-haole (inside joke, see when you haku-jin side, erryone is haole, so we ref uddah side, yeah?)

    so dese keeds all call me uncle jimmy, den Tita dem wen shawten to uncz, an' Edward wen shawten dem up to uji...

    so wen i google uji, it says honorific related to Japanese lineage, and since da Wife is nihon-jin, i t'ink, yah, dat works.. den i catch hint dat uji is local slang for some'ting else, to me sounds like squirrely or nervous..

    den hemaz wen use uji on "sayings" day ova heah an' apopogize to me, an' i t'ink, hooo, might mean "creepy" or sone'tin li-dat.. so den i think, yeah but Edward wen give to me, so must be da good kine, yeah?..

    so, the name is uncle jimmy, but you doesn't has to call me jimmy..
    you ken call me unc, or uncs, or uncj, or uji.. you ken even call me creepy, jus' don't call me late for dinner.. :lol:

    an' once again, as usual, one long freakin' A to one shawt Q.. :lol:

  17. kako mochi:

    kind of a long story, but i'm at work and have all day (j/k!)...

    my name came about when i was living w/my old classmate on pensacola st. the guys who lived in the same building were our friends too and we'd cruise at eachothers places all the time. anyway, one day i was w/my friend spying on our semi-hot neighbor in the next building and all of a sudden - my friend purrs out the window "kako" - from that ka'au crater boys song...anyway, we duck down real fast and just start cracking up! then he tells me: "that's what i'm going to start calling you - 'kako mochi'!"

    ten years later...i still answer to that name! it's evolved into KAKOPALOOZA (which is my annual week-long bday celebration...next week, baby!!), and kakolicious, kakonut (my sister's idea), kako-oke (me, @ karaoke), kako anything actually! LOL...

  18. Rosette:

    ROSETTE..... rosette.....a tiny thorny rose ...reflection of
    my personality.

  19. Ynaku:

    Sorry tita, ottotman taken

  20. kuya.d:

    @Lourdes or @Otot - hahahahahahaHA! I'm trying to weigh out my options here. Dis es he-larry-us!

    Today's actual survey for erryone should be:
    Should we call tita leerz "Lourdes" or "Otot"?

    Hahahahaha!

  21. rayboyjr:

    rayboyjr ...

    Obviously my real name is Michael ... ha ha ha ...

    It's like a nickname from friends (well the rayboy part, jr was just added in) ...

    Back in high school my friends would call my home asking for Ray ... so when my Mom or Dad answered they would yell out to call me "Boy! Boy! phone" ... my parents called me Boy (guess cause I was the only boy so was ony too easy) ... my friends jokingly called me Boy too, then eventually they added the two and the Rayboy name stuck ...

    Added in the jr part cause the rayboy name is used often ...

  22. J.P.:

    J's for my first name. The "P" actually stands for paranoid. My friends gave me that nickname because I get paranoid about things alot so for awhile, it was JP Wong and Associates. No clue why they added the "and Associates" part though.

  23. Kage:

    Kage in nihongo is shadow.
    I lurked for so long it was appropriate.

    It is also the name of my black cat. Although the vet calls him Cage. Watch out what you name your pets because they will reflect it. My cat always wants to be in the same room with me at all times.

  24. BananaFysh:

    BananaFysh is my real name. :razz:

    Just kidding. It's Banana Fish. ;)

    I got my name from a song title. I've only used this name on the HA blogs. Every other board or forum I've been on, I use a derivation of my last name.

    I wanted to stay somewhat anonymous here. Yeah, that seems to have worked out well. :razz: I've never had my picture posted anywhere else on the internet, but on these blogs, ai sus! :oops:

    :lol:

  25. World Wide Ed:

    * Raymond J. Johnson, Jr.:
    the name is Raymond J. Johnson, Jr...

    * hemajang:
    Hmmm, Sedward's World is nerdy good or SugiWasHea for your Where In Hawaii is Ed? segment.

    Ahahaha! Nerdy Good. LOL!

    * Ynaku:
    Ynaku = Wainaku (How creative is dat?)

    It's unique, but can tell what it is instantly. Creative to me bu. :)

    * frankie:
    What are you talking about? My real name is Bob.

    Dr. Bob? ;)

    * bB:
    So I just picked a car that I like in japan that has a "twin" in the states. But they stopped production on this model over here.

    Saw that funky thing when it first came out in Japan. Got to test drive one in Hawaii. Nevah had dat much powah (the first version), but I hear it's bettah now!

    -Sincerely
    RX300 (haha, yeah right!)

    * kuya.d:
    And hemaz, she does match her tita-ness, at least back in the day she did.

    Tita? Nah, she's a little kitten. :P

    * MakiSushi:
    My name reflects my fondness for this disappearing food item, going the way of the okazu-ya. I could be ConeSushi too.

    Ooooh! I loooooove the ConeSushi Maks! Good call!

    * NeedaHobby:
    Hmm, I always wondered why snow, was snow?

    Hahaha! There's not much to work with. I thought of snizzow or snow cone or snow white or island snow, but none of them really stuck out. Maybe I go try think of one good one Hobbz! Or maybe snow herself has an idea? :)

    * M:
    My screen name is the first letter of my first name, not creative at all.

    Nah, some peeps call me E too. Pretty standard kine. I like when their first and last names make a good acronym combo (e.g. JB, AJ, DJ). ;) Seems to all have Js in them eh? LOL! Maybe I can call you MJ just cause? :P

    * pink lady:
    Grease is my favorite movie!!

    LOLOL! Perfect fit pinkie! I like it! Just don't call me Putzie. :P

    * soogs:
    in response to your previous post, yea, our names are a little diff. but we're not as rare anymore. 30+ years ago, i remember looking in the phone book and seeing just a half of one column of us. now, i think get over half of one page. lookout lee's, chang's and smith's, the soog's are a-coming!

    Bwahahahahahahahahaha! Oh, sorry, was I not supposed to laugh? Yeah, you one 1 out of 5 if 1 is da tita maximum. I keed. :P

    * tita leerz:
    BTW, I like Hemaz suggestions: SugiWasHea.

    Or should it be SugiWuzHea? I feel like I have to put "Have one good summah!" now... :P

    * uji:
    so, the name is uncle jimmy, but you doesn't has to call me jimmy..
    you ken call me unc, or uncs, or uncj, or uji.. you ken even call me creepy, jus' don't call me late for dinner..

    * Rosette:
    ROSETTE..... rosette.....a tiny thorny rose ...reflection of
    my personality.

    Awww, I like Rosey better cause I don't picture you as thorny. :P

    * kuya.d:
    Today's actual survey for erryone should be:
    Should we call tita leerz "Lourdes" or "Otot"?

    Filipino to English translation please kuya. *blush*

    * rayboyjr:

    Hahaha, that reminds me of "All In Da Ohana" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP8ltQ-_oz8 ). Joonyah boy!

    * J.P.:
    J's for my first name. The "P" actually stands for paranoid. My friends gave me that nickname because I get paranoid about things alot so for awhile, it was JP Wong and Associates. No clue why they added the "and Associates" part though.

    Sounds like a funny group. I know a guy John P___ and I call him JP or Johnny P! :)

    * Kage:
    Kage in nihongo is shadow.
    I lurked for so long it was appropriate.

    LOL! Niiice! I knew there was a meaning behind the shadow!

    * BananaFysh:
    I wanted to stay somewhat anonymous here. Yeah, that seems to have worked out well. I've never had my picture posted anywhere else on the internet, but on these blogs, ai sus!

    Hahaha! So the place you use a fake name and try to stay anonymous has all your pics and the other places you used your real name get no photos? Too funny!

  26. kate:

    Kate is the name of my avatar on a video game. When we play, my husband, daughter, and friends call me kate (or katie) so it's an easy name for me to remember. In our game, my husband is called Bob and my daughter is Emma. Not real names but just for fun. If you should call me kate IRL, I'll probably answer since I've been using it for years.

    Not so interesting or exciting as some other peeps around here. I'm just not that creative.

  27. snow:

    it all started when i was born... it was cold and wintery, as my mom later told me. she gave me a middle name that meant, in part, "snow" in english. fast forward thirty or so years later to when i'm establishing my first hotmail account. i'm worried that if i pick something random, i'll forget it and won't ever be able to log back on (yes, an MLCer, even then! ha!)! so... i used a translation of my middle name, slightly embellished. since then, i've used that screen name many many a time! when i first started blogging here i was going to use the same name, but it was too long (lazy already... i thought i'd have to type it over and over!)... so i went with short and sweet, "snow." :) NeedaHobby... now you know! ;)

  28. MaryJane Zigginz:

    so the zigginz part was giving to me by a friend years ago and years ago i created the alias maryjane zigginz can also be spelled mary jane zigginz so i have a first last and middle name i use this every where i got maryjane just cause i liked the name especially back in the days

  29. Chicken Grease:

    Uh . . . :)

  30. NeedaHobby:

    @snow - that's a cute cool story. Hmm, Ed is actually stumped for a nickname for you?! *gasp*

  31. snow:

    what, ed? no nickname for me??? :(

    i agree, though, thumbs down to snizzow?????? i dunno... gotta think about it!

  32. Coconut Willy:

    I own Coconut Willy's!...NOT

    Here's my response from Midlife Crisis a while back

    # Coconut Willy:
    September 8th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

    @Coconut Willy - And how did you come up with your name?

    Ok. I think I explained it before somewhere, but here goes.
    Back in high school days, went with a bunch of other guys to Kauai to play a tennis tournament. We ate our dinners at a cheap, hotel restaurant and there was a sign advertising a drink called Coconut Willy. There must have also been a picture of a tiki or mask or something. Fast forward several hours and we have been partaking in some um.....local herbs. One of the guys looks at me and says "You look Coconut Willy".

    So, in searching for a catchy handle that I could remember, CW came to mind.
    (I don't even like coconut that much!)

  33. soogs:

    whoops. sorry, i guess i confus-ed you. we're both moto's. i just meant that the sugimoto name is a little different/unique like you mentioned in a previous post. but not for long! i've personally added two more to the soogs clan so watchout!

  34. BananaFysh:

    @Ed -- At risk of outing myself even further, your friend JP and I were room mates in college for a semester. ;)

    Small world, ne? :mrgreen:

  35. kuya.d:

    For snow, how about storm, as in snow storm? Shucks, it's longer. I like this one, "snow what!"

  36. Scott:

    No idea. It's not my real name, but I wish I had chosen something else because it's really wierd being called Scott when I meet people here in real life. I think it's causing me some sort of identity crisis!

  37. uji:

    @Scott.. yeah, dude, really, really weird..
    hi, my name is Mortimer J. Snerdfurkle, but you ken call me Scott..
    well, in that case, kay-den "Scott".. :lol: but hey...
    Scott-what? Scott-free? Scott-towels? Hop-Scott? Scott-baio, Scott-sdale?
    Scott-what? (j/k)..

  38. uji:

    @Scott.. wait, wait, brah, get 'em..

    Scott not-Scott.. :lol:

  39. tita leerz:

    @kuya...we should change your name to "hijack."
    @RayboyJr...you could sound like you Filipino cuz yo 'rents went double yo nickname like Bong-Bong, Bing-Bing, Ni-Ni, etc. ...sorry, no offense if you not.
    @Ed...what you mean you don't know what OTOT means? Can someone who not Filipino tell him?! If you have a Pidgin to Da Max, you can look in there. It might be right after "oofing." LOL!
    @BananaFysh...I have a friend who one lived in the apartments with a roommate who speared, what looked like, a beeeg ulua. He wrote under the photo "Big Fysh." I tink maybe das you? or maybe not.
    @uji...uncs is better :)

    -Lourdes, daughter of Madonna

  40. EMM386:

    I've always been a computer geek, and my initials are EMM so, when the old windows 3.11 memory manager was called emm386.exe.....what better nickname for me?

  41. uji:

    tita..

    how 'bout compromise... ujuncz..

    aaaah ha ha ha ha... even get one z..

    an' speakeen' of Z's, you do know the diff between 240-Z an' 280-Z, yeah??

    get 40 maw Z's.. :lol:

    ooh, told dat one 2-3 timez ova heah now.. eh, ainokea.. :lol:

  42. snow:

    scott - you know, when you meet people in real life you can let them know your real name! however, i did but they still call me snow!! heh heh... anyway, i think you look like a "scott" so maybe it's good that you didn't pick something too unusual ("yeah, he looks like an "- - - - - !")! hee hee... ;)

  43. kuya.d:

    Whew! I going get all confused with the handle changes. Uji, how 'bout J.uncz?

    Sincerely, hijax (can or what lourdes?)

  44. kuya.d:

    Yippee yi yay Banana Fysh burgers . . . sorry, that doesn't sound right. Give me back that Banana Fysh!

  45. tita leerz:

    @Uncs...ujuncz sound like oooh-junks. LOL
    @kuya...like ajax? ROTF

    Malama Pono,
    Lourdes

  46. kate:

    uncle jimmy:

    You appear to have an identity crisis! You do realize whatever name you chose for yourself, Ed will just give you another nickname! It's a vicious cycle.

    Uji is such a bizarre name. I think you know what that means...the next time the wife cook you something, tell her, "man, your cooking so uji!" and see what happens. You're starting to chose some wierd names. But then that just me...I even have some trouble calling you "uncle"! Uncle is an honorific that I reserve for someone old and I don't think of you as old. Aren't you still in your 30's?

  47. BananaFysh:

    @tita -- No, that wasn't me. I didn't live in the apartments. I didn't have any pictures of fish on my walls either. ;)

    @kuya -- yeah, sing it! w00t! :D

    That mini sirloin burger song sure is catchy too though. hehe. ;)

  48. HNL2LAS:

    hmmm yah... mine is pretty straight forward. I like airport codes... and I would go back and forth between HNL and LAS, when I lived in Las Vegas, and now living back home. I see both airports pretty often. Das it!

  49. S Ticket:

    A little late..but the S of course you know...the Ticket part...well that pays tribute to a certain friend of ours who refers to the gym as the "gun show" (from Anchorman of course)....haha

  50. uji:

    tita and kuya..

    hijax mo' like hi-jinx..

    kate.. that's pretty sweet to say, should be in 30's with 6 y.o., but Not..

    still sweet.. :lol:
