Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? - March 25, 2009
By World Wide Ed
Either Takeshi (kun) had really quick eyes last week, or he already knew the answer to our WIH contest: Little Seoul Korean Restaurant. Please help me congratulate Takeshi-kun. Omedetou!
Funny side note: I recently drove by Little Seoul on the way to Wal-Mart, only to find out that the sign doesn't even look like that anymore. Oh well. At least you gotum!
A-ight, no more animated GIF hints for you this week, as it's pretty much a gimme. I even tried to crop the photo to make it a little more difficult, but it's still pretty dang obvious. LOL! Pretty much the first person to check this after 12:00AM midnight will be the winnah. Bonus points for da one(s) who can name what "dish" this is and which location dis stay.

Um fly swatter soup from who the heck knows?
March 25th, 2009 at 12:29 am
Um, yeah! (it's at some buffet line, that bowl is where the serving spoon would go, right?) . . . dude, you killin' us.
I going throw in this guess, Elena's!
March 25th, 2009 at 12:50 am
I'll guess Zippy's! Zip Min at Zippy's? Actually, I dunno what all that stuff in your little white bowl is so maybe I dunno... but I got my guess in!
March 25th, 2009 at 5:52 am
I'd go with snow and that mustard shoyu in the little white bowl. I like their portuguese bean soup.
March 25th, 2009 at 5:53 am
@snow - the little white bowl...shoyu and mustard?
March 25th, 2009 at 7:25 am
Yup, l think snow get'um. I cannot handle ZipMin - too oily for me. I'm with hemajang, their Portuguese bean soup is top notch. Like their fried chicken too.
March 25th, 2009 at 7:36 am
i think snow is right, but which Zippy's? maybe the one off Vineyard downtown where they have the sit-down side..
March 25th, 2009 at 8:19 am
I think Snow is right. I like the chili there. I tried the Chili Moco (like Loco Moco but w/ chili instead of brown gravy) and it was actually really good. Well...not good for you..but ono! My absolute favorite from Zippys has to be the apple napples!
March 25th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Oooh, zippy's fried chicken is one of those things I gotta have when I'm on Oahu. This is lame, but I always order a couple sides of garlic bread too. And from Napoleon's, I dig the flaky donuts, that stuff gotta be worse than red meat!
March 25th, 2009 at 8:54 am
Wow, snow, you're good!! I would never have guessed Zippy's till I saw your post!
March 25th, 2009 at 9:31 am
Yes, like everyone else, it looks like Zippy's Zip Min. I would have said won ton min but I think they serve that in the regular saimin bowls.
Which Zippy's? I'm guessing either Mililani or Waipio.
@Maki...yay for the return of the original fried chicken! Their "new cuts" was so rip off! Everytime you bite into it you hit like part of a rib cage or something. I think "new cuts" actually meant "cheap cuts." LOL!
March 25th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Hey tita, "cheap cuts", you got it right! Dat kine "marketing" change no good; no mess with da original. Donkeys!!
March 25th, 2009 at 10:30 am
You guys keep talking about Zippys. Making my hungry for Fried Chicken and Chili. Aigoo
March 25th, 2009 at 10:56 am
kate - i thought it was shoyu mustard in that bowl but i was trying to figure out what those little white specks were... i never noticed that in my shoyu mustard!? maybe i was looking too hard trying to figure out if ed was trying to throw us off! ha ha...
melissa - my husband, son, and FIL all eat zip min trom time to time so i see that silver bowl often enough! we end up at zippy's kind of often because it's convenient (late night, something in the neighborhood).
March 25th, 2009 at 11:38 am
I rarely order zip min because I can never eat it all. Too much food for me.
Anybody coming my way, bring me a zip pac! No worry about airport security. They'll let the zip pac through no problem. Did that enough times.
So if everybody agree it's a zip min, I'll go play Uncle Jimmy's game...
Guess Which Zippy's?
My vote is for McCully.
March 25th, 2009 at 11:43 am
snow -
you notice the little white bowl already dirty? Ed was eating and already used the shoyu mustard. The little white specks are probably grease from the soup or whatever he dipped in.
Or maybe he needs a new camera.
March 25th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
anyone noticed they changed their noodles a while back? i think that's when i stopped eating the saimin there...i prefer the original noodles...like the original chicken.
March 25th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
hmmm... this was hard until I read snow's comment. I agree. Zip Min at Zippys!
March 25th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Fly swatter soup C Dubbs? *scratched head*
Hehe, one of these days Elena's gonna be correct kuys!
Good job snow! The white bowl is the mustard/shoyu combo action.
Good call on the PBS hemmaz! After trying to make our own (take soooo long!), I'd much rather just buy it here. LOL!
Word! Good eye katedawg!
Have you noticed that the tempura shrimp is shrinking too?
Nope, but (kinda) close uji!
Hmm... That doesn't sound right Hobbz. Guess I gotta see what it looks like to make a better assessment.
Why is ordering garlic bread lame kuys? She goes!
Guess it wasn't as obvious as I thought eh MC?
Getting colllllder leerz!
Donkeys! LOL!
LOL! I just ate lunch, and I'm still hungry for dat donkey, er chicken!
Wot? Like some Photoshop action snow? I would never do such a thing.
Winnah winnah (Zippy's) Chicken Dinnah! Way to go katedawg!
Haha! No, not my camera. It was actually the damage after we ate already. So yeah, all the oil and scraps from the Zip Min stay in dea.
Didn't notice that leerz, but I do notice when they don't boil (unfreeze?) it enough! Stay in clumps! Yuck!
True dat mcat! Hehe, dat rhymes!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
wid da old noodles, i know for sure never came frozen. they came fresh and dry. and you know, when it's boiling, they supposed stir da "pot" so no stick.
March 25th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
kate - oh yeah, i noticed that ed already used the shoyu mustard... da bowl dirty already!! lol...
March 25th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
eh, how come they no fundraiser the chicken? I rather have that over the chili anyday!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
And let me just say, Pearl City was king of Zippy's. Think about it, waimalu (across from best buy), waiau (by the power plant), and PC (by longs drugs).
And back in high school, erryone used to order chili burrito. Then when we used to hang in the parking lot, always had the call out, no fight, just the call out. So shame, no?
March 25th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
kuya - don't forget the one at Sears in Pearlridge
March 25th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
And Waipio - those kids go Pearl City. . . (no, leerz?)
March 25th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
@kuya...But Pearl City Zippy's has a sushi bar! Amazing how get 4 Zippy's in one area and all always busy!
Waipio kids go PC...even though they go past Waipahu. Weird, huh?
March 25th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
tita -
my sister and mom said the sushi there not so good. not fresh. I said maybe they went on the wrong day? You tried it yet?
my family is in Aiea so we go to PC zippys. Waimalu for take out.
March 25th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
@kate - I dunno, last time I had sushi at the PC one was pretty good, pricey, but good.
Ed- here's a topic idea - fave zippy's and fave zippy's story, huh?
March 25th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
kuya.d -
my sister's friend told her the sushi there was good (but expensive) so she and my mom went there for lunch one day. maybe she's just picky and likes to complain.
March 25th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
My friend took me to Kuru-Kuru at Pearl Kai and they were grinds for sushi. I like the conveyor belt deal. Their bowls were good.
March 26th, 2009 at 7:30 am
I shame. For the life of me, I couldn't recognize the bowl. I guess I was trying too hard cuz I thought it was the sukiyaki from Kenny's Restaurant.
But then again, the last time I ate "inside" at Zippy's (10 years ago, in high school), I could have sworn the Zip Min was served in a gigantic plain ceramic bowl.
Take heart in knowing you confused at least one person, Ed-sama!
March 26th, 2009 at 9:43 am
@kate...I usually just eat salmon nigiri. The ration of fish to rice is huge! So much fish. I've never had a bad experience with it. Always like butter and melt in your mouth. Occasionally, I'll have some ikura or a roll but I'm mainly there for the salmon and the restaurant special of the day.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
ok. time to make a list of where to eat on my next trip home. will be there in july. any suggestions?
Tita, thanks. I'll have to go there and try for myself. yummm
March 26th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
aww no new blog today... hehee.
March 26th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
@kate....yanagi sushi, Doraku in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center...hhhmmm...
we're hijacking ed's blog again.
March 26th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Hello Ed from Shinagawa, Japan!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
Ho, noodle expert! When can we come over for home made saimin leerz?
LOL! Sorry yeah!
Oooh, good idea! Maybe the Zippy's marketing peeps will read this start um up. Dey bettah give you credit though! Haha!
Ho, talk about ghetto kuys! Nah! Our problem was saying bye to erryone in the restaurant, and then staying 30 more minutes in the parking lot. LOL!
That sushi bar was pretty good last time I went there back in the day (and they give BIG pieces!). Anyone have a current review?
Oops, I spoke too soon. Hehe!
Oooh, we all should have choke stories yeah? I go queue dat one up.
I only went there one. I can't remember clearly, but I think I remember it being decent, for "fast food" kine. I still like Genks more though.
Awwwwright!
If it's sushi/Japanese food you're looking for, you HAVE TO go to my favorite: Tokkuri-Tei!
Hehe, yeah, sorry mcat. Was busy running around doing errands on my off day.
Will be back tomorrow fo sho!
Haha, das cool. I like dat we help each oddah.
Osu! M-san! Havin' fun!?!? I'm jealous!!!
