News Day Tuesday: LeBron James Goes Off

February 24th, 2009

(continuing my whining from yesterday's post... Can we please sign BronBron to next season's UH squad?

Last Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James went nuts on the Milwaukee Bucks early in the 3rd quarter as he lit up Richard Jefferson and his teammates for 16 points in less than 3 minutes of action. Read an excerpt from the NBA.com recap and then check out the insane YouTube clip below.

[From nba.com]

MILWAUKEE(AP) LeBron James heaved a 33-foot shot through the net to beat the buzzer and headed into halftime with 25 points under his belt.

Turns out, he was just getting warmed up.

James erased the Cleveland Cavaliers' halftime deficit by scoring 16 points in less than three minutes to begin the third quarter, on his way to 55 for the night - one shy of his career high - in a 111-103 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.

"Just got in the zone, man,'' James said. "I saw a few go down, so I just kept going at it, man. Every shot that I made tonight, every shot that we all made tonight, we needed.''

James' big night included his remarkable run in the first 2:50 of the third quarter, almost single-handedly turning a six-point halftime deficit into an eight-point Cavaliers lead. And he could have scored two more in that stretch if he hadn't missed a pair of free throws.

"It was almost like watching a video game,'' Zydrunas Ilgauskas said...

Video game is right Big Z. That was some sick Double Dribble/NBA Jam-like action there. Oh yeah! Remember those classics? :) Check out the video proof:

    HE'S ON FIRE!!! ;)

    I forget the "big head" codes for NBA Jam. I used to know how to get Mark Turmell as a playable character, and some of the other programmers too. :D

    That video of Lebron is unreal. The guy is just awesome. :shock:

    I'm not really a basketball fan anymore - I think I "feel out of love" with hoops when they went on strike the last time. I can appreciate the game, but just not into following the NBA anymore. :|

    I never got "into the zone" like that. I WISH! :razz:

    Nah, I play more for assists than baskets. ;)

  2. bB:

    he was in the zone alright. that was pretty good display of shooting.

    don't really watch basketball as much as before, ever since mj retired. now more of fantasy basketball fan and depends if the it's a good game or if the lakers are playing. watch more lakers games recently, because of kobe.

    been in the zone a few times for different sports didn't really know it at the time, but it's a rush especially after when you slowly realize what just happened.

  3. frankie:

    Lebronze is awesome, but he's in danger of becoming the next Kobe...talented player who alienates his team with his selfishness and in doing so loses championships. With his feeding the rumors that he's leaving Cleveland once his contract is up during the middle of a championship run is very Kobe-like.

    Don't do it, Lebronze!

    As for UH, can't we just bring back Anthony Carter again?!

  4. MakiSushi:

    I can't view the video - blocked on my work PC; my boss no trust me, for good reason. :smile:

    I'm not a LeBron fan, but the guy is awesome, super human, he defines the NBA today. Not a Cavalier fan either. frankie makes a good point about LeBron; he can detract from the team. and LeBron looked like he was 24 when he came outta high school!

    I start watching NBA games after March Madness. To me, their season is too long. It's amazing 'tho, every night, unreal NBA highlights, on ESPN. I'm less of a fan than I was, say ten years ago; but I'm still a fan.

    I never played organized ball, but sure was fun on the courts playing pick-up games in da old days. It was a rush to hit the outside shots; tickle the twine baby!

  5. kuya.d:

    Bron is a beast! So is Kobe, Dwight Howard, D-wade, Danny Granger, and on and on . . .

    The NBA's young talent is hot too - Kev Durant, B Roy, Eric Gordon, Rajon Rondo, and D Rose.

    Did you see Krypto-Nate go for 41 last nite, DWade for 50 on Sunday, and Dev Harris' game winner last nite? NBATV son . . . My fave Oceanic bargain.

    Me, I'm a die hard G-State fan. We keep losing, but someday the talk of all the potential will become talk of legitimate playoff threats. Watch out for Monta Ellis, Anthony Randolph, & The youngsters.

  6. kuya.d:

    Ed, that's why our 'low-key' jerseys were blue and yellow - reppin' the bay area . . . hella good!

  7. NeedaHobby:

    Hey Ed. I cannot watch the video on my work computer. Anyways, sorry, I'm not much of a basketball fan. Other than some UH games, I'll only faithfully watch the March Madness games. I guess I prefer watching college hoops because the players seem to be playing to win and for the love of the game and their teammates. There's no big money or endorsements involved.

    Oh, one question I did have though ... why do the Cavaliers keep changing their uniform? I notice that on the highlights on the news.

    As far as being on a roll, does H-O-R-S-E count?

  8. rayboyjr:

    Not a big LeBron fan. He's a one-in-a-million talent for sure, but not his game leaves me longing for another Michael Jordan to surface. Kobe and D-Wade are more Jordan-esque where Lebron relies more on his size/quickness combo and is not really a creative force with his game. Don't get me wrong, absolutely a top-3 NBA player but not enough finesse and pizzazz for my tastes.

    On a related note - Lebron and Greg Oden share the top prize for already looking like over 30-yr olds the moment they stepped on an NBA court!

  9. BananaFysh:

    The video could have used a few more NBA Jam voiceovers.

    "From DowwwwnTowwwwn!"

    and the ever popular:

    "BOOM-SHAKA-LAKA!!"

    :lol:

    @kuya.d - when I was following the NBA, I was a big GS fan too, back in the days of Run T.M.C. I always wanted to break somebody's ankles with the "UTEP-2 step." ;) I did a variation of it, and faked a dude out so bad, he wound up on his butt. :shock: I couldn't believe that happened, and just looked at him, and wound up losing the ball. :lol:

  10. World Wide Ed:

    * BananaFysh:
    That video of Lebron is unreal. The guy is just awesome.

    And he missed those two free throws, so it could've actually been 18 points! Nuts yeah BF(F)!?

    * bB:
    been in the zone a few times for different sports didn't really know it at the time, but it's a rush especially after when you slowly realize what just happened.

    Nice bB! Yeah, the adrenaline just kicks in and you feel like you can do anything huh?

    * frankie:
    Lebronze is awesome, but he's in danger of becoming the next Kobe...talented player who alienates his team with his selfishness and in doing so loses championships.

    No ways yo! Bronzie is dope cause he does errthang. Rebounds, Assists, plus he's a scoring beast! He's a fantasy monster. You lucky if you can get more than 5 dishes from Kobes.

    * MakiSushi:
    I never played organized ball, but sure was fun on the courts playing pick-up games in da old days. It was a rush to hit the outside shots; tickle the twine baby!

    Woah, we got the outside threat in Maks eh? We should join a league! ;)

    * kuya.d:
    Me, I'm a die hard G-State fan. We keep losing, but someday the talk of all the potential will become talk of legitimate playoff threats.

    Ho! Talk about loyalty! ;) That's back when C Webb used to be a monstah!

    * kuya.d:
    Ed, that's why our 'low-key' jerseys were blue and yellow - reppin' the bay area . . . hella good!

    I thought it was for Kaiser... ;)

    * NeedaHobby:
    As far as being on a roll, does H-O-R-S-E count?

    Word up Hobbs! Took someone to school in that game eh?

    * rayboyjr:

    Hahaha! Cold rbj, but so true!

    "BOOM-SHAKA-LAKA!!"

    LOLOLOL! Oh the memories!

  11. Robbie:

    This may be going off the SB page in a bit (last story in section). From the AP U.S. News section:

    Cop makes arrest in bathroom after smelling crack
    24 Feb. 20095:54 PM EST

    ELKTON, Md. (AP) — The Cecil County Sheriff's Office said a deputy about to take a bathroom break at a gas station smelled crack cocaine and made a quick arrest. Police spokesman Lt. Bernard Chiominto said Deputy John Lines was waiting to use the bathroom Friday at a Wawa convenience store when he smelled crack cocaine from outside the bathroom

    What a headline!

  12. NeedaHobby:

    @Robbie - that IS a funny headline! What a crack up! :lol: That would be a good one for Jay Leno's segment on headlines. ;)

  13. not a big sports fan...but like LeBron anyway:

    I remember when LeBron was just about to graduate from h.s. My guy friends made me sit through videos of his h.s. games and he's been one of my faves since. I only remember his earlier time, but he used to be pretty humble and made it a point to have these really creative passes (which made it fun to watch). I heard he was getting better from playing with Kobe in the Olympics, but I hope Kobe's attitude didn't rub off on him...Anyways, he's still one of the only players that makes watching sports enjoyable for me.

  14. kuya.d:

    @Bananz- word on the run tmc. Way to bus out the 2-step. My game was closer to Mully . . . very slow.

    Ed, we could rep Kaisah, no matter cause Mex and his friend (I think his name was Reid, he ran point too) said we was repping punahou practice colors. It's all about team baybee!

  15. kuya.d:

    Ed, remember that game we used to play back at Wesley? Who's da shi-zzles? The tip game.

  16. kuya.d:

    @tita leerz - pua ting, two days of hoops talk. No worries, tomorrow nite is top chef finals, we can side talk about that soon.

  17. Beara:

    I am a huge fan of the NBA. I bought the NBA League Pass Broadband so I could watch all the games wherever I go on my laptop. As a fairly new (within the last 3 or 4 years), female NBA fan, LeBron is one of my top faves because he is just a beast. I do remember watching MJ when I was younger, but I never followed the game like I do today. And as a longtime UH sports fan, I am thrilled to see AC play in the NBA as well.
